My computer says i have 4 GB (3 GB usable)

I am pretty sure that means I, essentially, have 3 GB of because I believe the 1 gig is reserved for the computers standard processes.

My question is, what is the most I should allocated to Minecraft?

At most, 1GB, more will cause instability and crashes.
I am running Minecraft with the bare minimum, 256mb minimum and maximum, and it runs fine.
