So I wanted to have the 1.5.2 version of minecraft and at the same time have access to my 1.4.7 version of which holds my Let's Play world. Some of the mods installed on my 1.4.7 version haven't been updated for 1.5.2 yet, but I wanted to join some of my friends on a 1.5.2 server, so I created an extra version of minecraft on the same harddrive using this guide.
It works perfectly fine in vanilla, and my 1.4.7 version is completely unaffected by it, but I wanted to install forge and install a couple of mods to join the server my friends are on. However, after I installed the recommended version of forge for 1.5.2 (minecraftforge-universal-1.5.2-7.8.0.684), it still showed the vanilla screen. There was no crash or anything, and there was no little popup from forge right before the menu loaded. It's just as if forge was never installed at all.
I followed exactly step by step. I made sure there was nothing in the mods and coremods folders, even the texturepack folder as well, and forge still doesn't show up. Not sure what to do now, so I was hoping you guys could help me.
And just so no one is confused, my original 1.4.7 version of Minecraft runs forge and everything just fine. All the issues I've talked about in this post are related to the 1.5.2 version of minecraft on my harddrive.
There's a much easier way to do what you are trying to do: simply rename your 1.4.7 jar to something else, and force-update and then install forge on your new 1.5.2 jar while keeping your 1.4.7 jar! Try force-updating your 1.5.2 jar, and re-installing forge.
I'm curious, wouldn't renaming my 1.4.7 jar mean I would have to reinstall forge 1.4.7 whenever I wanted to play on it again?
For example, the way I have it set up right now is that all I have to do in order to switch versions is click one of two shortcuts: the bat file for 1.5.2, or the MC launcher for 1.4.7.
If I used the method you mentioned, would I have to do more than that to switch between versions?
Also, would I be able to have different mods installed on different versions using the method you mentioned? Because that's also what I want to do.
I'll try force updating my 1.5.2 copy and reinstall forge. Let's see what happens...
lol so I figured out what was wrong. This is text in the bat file:
set APPDATA=c:\Minecraft 1.8\data
bin\minecraft.exe
I created a different folder thinking that it would work that way, when in fact I needed to copy my files into the 1.8 folder. Didn't even notice that folder until 10 minutes ago, and somehow I magically missed the glaring "1.8" folder part in the bat file. wow lol...
So I copied all of my files into the correct folder and installed forge there, and now it works perfectly! I'm just glad it was a simple mistake lol...
Although my initial problem is resolved, I'm still interested in a response to my questions in my previous post. If someone could kindly answer them it would be much appreciated! I'm like really intuitive about certain things like this and then other things take me much longer to comprehend. I'm weird like that.
