I started a new world in Survival mode (I am 100% sure it's not Adventure mode) and I could only break a number of blocks, like sand, sandstone cane etc. but not logs, stone, cobblestone or anything helpful to crete tools. I can't break dirt or grass blocks, but I can break Stone Bricks! I also don't take ANY fall damage. WHAT IS GOING ON WITH MY MINECRAFT!?
Then just force update and try it with a clean install, I don't know what else to suggest you haven't mentioned if you have mods installed or anything.
If you do have extras installed on your game that have added folders and files to your .minecraft folder then you probably want to clean it out so that you can start fresh.
Delete everything in your .minecraft folder except for...
1. saves
2. stats
3. texture packs
4. servers
5. lastlogin
Then start minecraft to auto-download and install the game files to replace the ones you just deleted.
That should correct any problem you are having with the game.
Then just force update and try it with a clean install, I don't know what else to suggest you haven't mentioned if you have mods installed or anything.

Maybe you're in some sort of protected area, similar to the spawn protection on servers?

Yeah well, it is most likely something to do with the mods that is causing this then, kinda figured that might be the case. The not taking any fall damage thing is just weird behavior for someone not in creative but normal in some mod instances. Well good luck with it, there is certainly no way anyone but you is going to be able to trouble shoot this since you aren't crashing and there is no error log to show us.
Are you using Magic launcher or something where you can disable mods individually to try to determine what might be causing it or is it all or nothing?
Ok, TMI, Optifine, FML (ForgeModloader) The Hero mod, Super Villians, T Construct, more swords, Kowloon Swords, Rival Rebels, The Wars mod, Jammy Furniture, a Doctor Who mod, Weeping Angels mod, Atum, Damage Indicators, Rei's Minimap. And that's about it,

I use a normal launcher. And I can try that! I just hope it's not one of my favorites.

I am 100000000% sure I'm in Survival. And even in Adventure mode I should take fall damage. Any other ideas>
