After playing vanilla for so long I decided to try out a few mods. First I tried mod packs but they were killer on my fps so I installed these mods individually:
forge 7.7.2.678
buildcraft A 3.5.0
forestry A 2.2.0.0
extra biomes xl 3.1.3.0
not enough items 1.5.2.10
portal gun
optifine HD D1
I'm also using magic launcher with minecraft 1.5.1. Everything seems to be relatively bug free except a couple of things. First, the old light bugs that seem to be mostly gone from vanilla minecraft are back. I'm talking about black areas that look like caves from a distance until you get close or place a torch in them. I also notice that shade under trees is dark to begin with but when I walk under the trees it lights up a bit. Second, when I change the render distance the game fails to render the distant terrain, so all I see is entities and sky. Oddly, when I hit esc to open the menu everything begins to render. Here is a screenshot of the problem:
The distant rendering isn't a problem with new worlds until I change the render distance in the video options.
For what it's worth I just did a fresh install of minecraft, did a force update, deleted META-INF, and copied the forge files into the minecraft.jar. I tested before and after installing forge and it is definitely forge that is introducing the light glitches.
Texture pack is Isabella. Issue is the same with any texture pack. Unless there is a shader that addresses this issue specifically then I don't think that's an option. I just want to get rid of the lighting glitches if possible

i remember sonic ether's shaders but that really lowers your fps, even with a graphic card http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1544257-glsl-shaders-mod-modified-by-karyonix/ for other shaders and the actual mod BUT it's for 1.4.7 but if you search around the back of the forum page, someone should direct you to a beta version of 1.5
