I am having issues understanding how to install mods. I have the basic jist of it from what I've been reading in the forums. From what I can tell to make things easier on myself, I am using Magiclauncher. Currently trying to install the following.
Enchanting Plus
Optifine
Singleplayer commands
Timber
Forge
Doku RPG
John smith Legacy
Zelda HD
I know the last 3 are all texture packs which cannot be used at the same time. Those are just 3 that I have come accross that I like and downloaded them all to see which I liked better.
The only mods I have gotten an "ok" on are optifine and singlerplayer commands. John Smith Legacy i have gotten to somehow be used as the default texture pack, so I know that works. The Doku and Zelda packs are having issues as far as I can tell. Doku for sure has an issue, and I haven't been able to have ZeldaHd be used as the default texture pack like I did with John Smith. Two mods, Enchanting Plus and Timber, require Forge, which I have been unable to find any info on how to properly install it.
I DO NOT have the full version of Minecraft yet, so I am testing these using the demo. I would like to understand more about mods and be able to properly get them installed and working before I commit to buy. They are one of the big reasons why I want to upgrade from the Xbox version to the PC. I'll include a screenshot of what I see in Magiclauncher to help.
I would like help understanding what I'm doing wrong when installing Forge. I assume if I can get Forge installed, that Enchanting plus and Timber will follow suit and work properly. Currently I am trying to install Forge like the other mods, and using the "add" function in Magiclauncher. From what I've read Magiclauncher makes everything easier by not having to alter or edit the minecraft.jar file.
Please help a modding noob understand what I am doing wrong. Even though I don't think it's relavent I will include the system specs of my computer.
First, you need to have Minecraft Forge on the top of the list in Magic Launcher. That's one of the things Magic Launcher does. It allows you to arrange mods so as that class files with the same name will be overwritten in any pattern that suits your needs.
Second, you're not installing texture packs properly. Texture packs are not installed the same way mods are. You need to find your way to AppData/Roaming/.minecraft/texturepacks in your folder system. That's where you put texture packs, which can be changed ingame.
Also, Doku RPG is WAYYY outdated. Doku RPG is for a version of Minecraft from back in Beta.
You want Dokucraft: The Saga Continues. It's the closest thing to Doku RPG that keeps updated.
That's the thing about texture packs. Just as mods do, they need to be updated for every version of Minecraft. Make sure EVERY texture pack and mod you're using is updated to the current version of Minecraft. (Currently 1.5.1)
EDIT: I just noticed, you shouldn't be using two different kinds of Minecraft Forge.
The Javadoc is used for people who MAKE mods.
You want Universal, for USING mods.
I forgot to mention, yes I know that the texture packs go in the texture pack folder, but using the demo still for testing, I can't choose texture packs. Installing them this way is what made it possible for John Smith to become the default pack in game.
I moved all 3 Forge files to the top of the list, which reminds me of one question I forgot about. Do I need all 3 files? I didn't know what to download and install, the Javadoc, SRC, or universal. When I moved all 3 to the top, the Forge universal changes to "1 errors". Enchantingplaus and Timber change to "OK" and singleplayer commands changes to "2 errors".
I guess I will play around with load order a bit to see if I can get this to work, but I am still curious if I need all 3 Forge files, and if so, is there an order to them.
Thank you for the quick help, I was expecting to check back on this in a day or 2 and see like 1 reply saying to search, which I have been.
No problem.
Also, you only need Universal.
SRC and Javadoc are used by modmakers. Universal is for making mods compatible.
And the error on the Universal forge is normal. Forge and Magic Launcher seem not to like eachother, but I've never ran into any issues.
And with Single Player Commands, I also believe that's normal.
Saw your edit, thanks. Took those 2 Forge files out. Forge universal still says 1 error, SPC still says 2 errors. and I tried to test it since you say they haven't caused you problems, but they don't like me. Wierd loading screen pops up that normally didn't before, something about FML checking Forge files, then it gives an error screen. And if I move SPC to the top of the list, it goes back to "OK" status, but the Forge Universal file gets 6 errors rather than 1.
I forgot photobucket sizes images down, error says mods and version can't be found " Forge 7.7.1.644"
I just noticed two things wrong. EnchantingPlus and SPC are Jar files. Those are automatic installers that are incompatible with Magic Launcher. Go back to the websites or threads for those mods and download "Manual installation" and put them in.
Also, it appears that Forge has been updated. You need the latest version of forge for Minecraft 1.5.1.
Oh yeah, I forgot I would try to make things easier on myself and get the automatic installers, I didn't realize using the MagicLauncher would be considered manual installing. I thought I was using the current Forge, I following the links in the list of mods, I just choose the recommended downloads rather than the latest. I thought recommended meant they were proven stable while the latest would be considered new "beta" versions.
Other than these few issues with conflicts, am I doing this right for the most part?
EDIT:
Ok, got the right version for Forge, and the game does load. Now the main menu includes a "mods" button, which lists Optifine, MC coder pack, Forge Mod loader, MC Forge, and Timber. Does SPC not show up, or are the 2 errors preventing it from working?
I guess John Smith working is just a fluke, I'm fairly sure I can get the other texture packs to work once I buy the game. All I really need to understand morea bout are the errors, and playing with load orders for things.
Yes. Also, you are right, recommended is the tested, stable version, whereas latest is usually still being tested and worked on. Perhaps this forge error was just caused by the installers though.
And also, Magic Launcher is considered manual. The way it works is complicated. It takes all the mods you have set up, in whatever order you have them, and one-by-one injects them into .minecraft in their appropriate areas. However, this is temporary, and they get removed after shutting the launcher down, leaving you with a vanilla, unaltered Minecraft directory.
I think I was editing my last post when you were responding.
Still can't find Enchanting Plus manual installer, SPC doesn't seem to be working, not sure if that's because its the demo/testing, or if it's just not installing properly. I can't get any of the listed commands to work. And I thought you couldn't change texture packs in the demo, but it seems you can, sort of. I installed them properly, and can change to John Smith fine. I can choose the 3 Doku packs, and when changing them I see the main menu change to that pack, and the UI changes, but not the actual blocks. Same goes for the Zelda pack.
I thought it might have been because I wasn't using MCPatcher HD, so I downloaded that as well, following the instructions and clicked "patch" but still they don't work. Only thing I've been successful at recently is adding a minimap mod to the list.
Single Player Commands should be working. Are you trying to use Worldedit commands? A bit more has to be done to get Worldedit to work with Magic Launcher.
I thought about that too, and you can't do that in the demo. But using the Test feature on Magiclauncher allows me to create a new world, rather than load the demo world. So I did make a survival world with cheats enabled, and still couldn't get SPC to work.
But in the mods list on the main menu, it does list Optifine, Timber, and enchanting plus (even using the .jar auto installer), but it doesn't list SPC. And SPC still says 2 errors in the ML setup.
I'm not too worried about SPC, because looking through the list of commands, I think I only wanted it to enabling flying for whenever I build tall structures. I guess once I do buy MC I can play with it more then. ATM I'm mainly trying to find a way to get Dokucraft and ZeldaHd to work. And playing in the world I just created to try and find diamond so I can make an enchanting table to test Enchanting plus out to make sure that works too.
Doku and Zelda want to work. I can tell they are trying. Doku changing the UI and menus, but not the blocks. And Zelda changes nothing, but it's trying to use a different texture for the hunger bars, because those look very weird like the image used for them is missing.
Well, I made an enchanting table and the UI is there, I'm a lvl 19, but anytime I try to choose an enchantment, the UI turns red, like I'm not a high enough level. Even just trying to do a single Efficiency I it won't let me. I'm not sure if I have to be an even higher level, or if it's not installing properly off the .jar file. It does show up in the "mods" list in the main menu, and the UI works fine, I just can't enchant anything.
I thought they all were, but it seems they may not be. John Smith is only 1.5, but it works. Doku is 1.5, and ZeldaHd I can't find any info on what version is supports.
I guess I just assumed I am doing something wrong, but I can get John Smith to work, so I must be doing it right.
I still can't get Enchanting plus to work for the life of me. I installed it the way the instructions said to, by placing the .jar file into the mods folder. It shows up in Magiclauncher in the external mods section. It shows up in the mods menu of the game main menu. And the UI works, but not the actual enchanting. I've tried the 1 and only FAQ suggestion to fix it, and it doesn't work.
I even made a gold pickaxe since gold tools are supposed to have a better enchantability.
1.5 texture packs will work fine with 1.5.1.
As for EnchantingPlus, that might be an issue with the mod itself. Try asking for help on the mod's thread.
Yeah, I did ask about Eplus in the Eplus thread. I assumed I could at least get low level enchantments out of a plain table, turns out that mod requires bookshelves to be placed around it in order to work, kinda sucks, but I always put 15 around them anyways.
But since Doku claims to be up to 1.5, it should work, hmmm. Other than placing the texture pack files in the texture pack folder, is there some other way to install them? I just can't figure out why John Smith will work fine, yet Doku won't change the blocks, but does the menu and UI. I've treid using all 3 versions of Doku too, same behavior out of all of them.
I guess maybe it's just a bug with that pack or something, otherwise I do have a much better handle on how installing mods and load orders seem to work, and what to look for.
I cannot thank you enough for taking the time to explain this stuff, and having the patience for my noobness.
EDIT: I keep forgetting to ask this. Not really mod related, but is there anyway to make sneak/crouching to be a toggle feature? I have died so many times when trying to maneuver around lava using sneak and I walk right off. I miss it being able to be toggled like on the Xbox version.
Dokucraft is a 32x32 texture pack, meaning it's HD. HD texture packs need either the MCPatcher or OptiFine to work properly, but not both.
Using them both can cause issues. Didn't you mention having used the MCPatcher? I also see OptiFine in your mod log.
Or perhaps HD texture packs aren't available in the demo.

it is the exact same as the original but much more up-to-date
Hey everyone, I'm back!
Using them both can cause issues. Didn't you mention having used the MCPatcher? I also see OptiFine in your mod log.
Or perhaps HD texture packs aren't available in the demo.
