Hi. I’m a Dad of two boys (aged 8 and 6) who love Minecraft. They want to install Mods. So, although not a Minecraft player myself I’ve watched the youtube videos and read the instructions. I downloaded and install Forge successfully, with the “Mods” button coming up on the front page of our Minecraft and the creation of the mods folder in the right directory, etc.
But then I try installing “Flans Mod 2.2 for Minecraft 1.5 Universal” and fail miserably. I’ve downloaded it and put the unzipped version in the mods folder under .minecraft. Then I start up Minecraft. It does the right FML loading thing, goes past the Mojang screen, then stalls with a black screen and goes no further. Just hangs there with a black screen. I go into the mods folder and remove it, then it works fine.
I initially suspected it must be something to do with our firewall or Norton anti-virus, stopping the creation of the Flan folder and unpacking of the software. So I temporarily stopped Norton and our firewall. Still nothing. We are running Windows 7.
I’ve spent hours and hours on this. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Whoops, that's what I meant. I put the single zipped file (Flans Mod 2.2 for Minecraft 1.5 Universal.zip) in my mods folder. Then I start minecraft and it gives me the black, blank screen after the Mojang screen. Frustrating.... Thanks for your quick response anyway.

I've now downloaded the very latest Forge as you suggest, which now runs fine on our minecraft. But still no luck with getting Flan's mod started. Still no idea why. The new, single zipped mod goes into the mods folder and it stalls as per usual.
I'm now going to try beating it with a stick to see if that makes a difference.
