Hello, I'm some what new to Minecraft and would like to add some mods but can't get anything to work. I have watched countless tutorials and when attempted never work. I am running a Mac with OSX 10.7.5 and Minecraft 1.5.1. I have attempted to install the following mods.
-minecraftforge-universal
-Aether mod
-OptiFine
-ShapeShifterZ72
-Too Much TNT
I understand the process of unarchiving the minecraft.jar file and copying .class files into it, and deleting the META-INF file. I understand that many mods require Modloader and forge to operate but every time I try to install them my Minecraft stops working. For example, when I try to install minecraftforge after login It crashes on a screen that says "Updating minecraft" "Done Loading" and when I try to force update, then login, I get "Failed to launch fatal error occurred (4): /Users/mac/library/Application support/minecraft/bin/minecraft.jar
retrieving: lwjgl_util.jar 15%. I am simply out of things to try. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
You need mods to be updated to the minecraft version your playing, or downgrade minecraft to the version the mods are at, if this isn't done they will not work
Forge install has changed, don't delete the meta-inf folder, just delete the files with the name mojang from the meta-inf folder
Thanks webrosc for your response. OK, so i'm going to start with just trying to get Minecraft forge to work. I downloaded the mod, starting with a fresh copy of Minecraft, I opened the minecraft.jar file and copied all the files from the forge mod into it and renamed the folder with .jar.
I checked the meta-inf folder to delete the files you suggested but it appears the forge mod had already replaced the contents, makes sense. Then when I try to relaunch Minecraft I am met with the same result. After login I get a frozen screen displaying "Updating Minecraft" "Done Loading" and a green bar. What am I missing? Again, I am running minecraft 1.5.1 on a mac with OSX 10.7.5.
P.S. The Minecraft Forge mod I downloaded said it was for 1.5.1
P.S.S. How would I go about down grading my version of mine craft?

ModeratorShape Shifter mod is 1.3.2
Too Much TNT is 1.4.7
And Optifine is in 1.5.1 testing so will be buggy
