Hi anyone..need some help. How do I install minecraft mods/games etc on the computer. My kids want Herbrine's mansion..for example. Aside from every download site trying to install a ton of junk, when I do get the download it doesn't go anywhere, and the file/files have no executable to install. Since Minecraft pretty much sits on the desktop, where do i put this download and any others? Do I copy it to a minecraft directory? One in particular? Please let me know. Can't be hard i just don't see it.
Thanks

Yes in fact you do have to put it in a specific sub-directory of the .minecraft folder. But the directory changes depending on what you are trying to install.
Herobrine's Mansion I believe would simply go into the Saves folder.
Mods are a bit more complicated.
And texture packs just go in the texture packs folder.
If you go to the threads for what ever it is You are trying to get here on the forums you will find detailed instructions for how to set up the mod, texture pack, or Adventure map, in the very first post. Instructions provided by the content creator. If you follow those it all should be fine.
They also have the proper download links for the content.

Humanity is the creation of Logic and Emotion, Calculation and Imagination, Cold Analysis and Blind Faith. This is why I believe it is a strange Human that would prize one while shunning the other. For a calculator can do math just as well as you, but a calculator can not use math to make the world a better place.
-Hit the start menu
-In the Search programs and files bar type "%appdata%" Without quotes
-Click the file that shows up it should be "roaming"
-In this list should be the ".minecraft" folder where the files of minecraft are kept.
-For example the one marked "Saves" are the saved worlds. This is where the maps go. When maps are placed here they will show up when selecting a world to play on in minecraft.
Mods are slightly more complicated though, usually requiring file openers such as "7zip"
Be sure when you are getting these maps/mods that you click on the right download links as many websites that host them have tons of buttons saying "download x here"
There are modpacks such as tekkit, Feed the Beast and many others that actually use separate launchers so that you don't have to mess around in the files. When downloaded they will show up in the "roaming" folder as ".tekkit" or whatever was downloaded
Hope this helps. If you need specifics or more help there are plenty here able and willing to answer questions. Just beware of the trolls.
For mods, your best bet would be to download and use MCPatcher, and then just follow the instructions given to you on the mod's forum page. Other than that, this video might be helpful.
