I started playing Minecraft a while ago on the xbox, even before there was creative mode. I enjoyed that version, but was curious to see what the PC version had that the xbox version didn't, which I found out to be a lot. However, there were a good amount of issues I was running into:
Operating SystemMicrosoft Windows 7 Professional 64-bit Edition
Display Type15.6 in TFT active matrix
Max Resolution1366 x 768 ( HD )
Graphics ProcessorIntel HD Graphics 3000 Dynamic Video Memory Technology
Optical DriveDVD-Writer - Integrated
Three things are different in my case, I have upgraded to 8gb ram at times, I plug my laptop into a 40 inch 1080p television, and lastly, I am using Ubuntu primarily. I also have installed optifine.
1. Issue #1-Framerate
I have noticed that my frame-rate is not what I would expect it to be, considering an i5 processor, even though I do not have a dedicated graphics card. Using the standard texture pack, I average around 17fps for a while, then it will go up somewhat to about 20fps after being in the same real for a long time. This all at normal render distance, changing it to far does not change much of anything, surprisingly. My framerate will jump up to about 30 when I look straight down or up. A friend of mine plays Minecraft on his single core windows netbook, and his average framerates are usually higher than mine (around 22 or so). Also, playing minecraft for the PC means I want a texture pack, and not just the 16x16 texture pack. I would, ideally, like to play on a 1024x1024 texture pack, but I am not unrealistic and know that anything less than a Watson computer would not be able to handle this. I would ideally like a texture pack that is somewhere between 64x64 and 256x256. I tested to see how much the frame rate was affected by me changing map packs (using optifine) and here is what I noticed: Normal (avg. 17fps) 64 Mesa Realistic (16fps) 64 photo-realistic (16fps) and 256 photo-realistic (14-15fps). I have tried everything I could between having no windows open, allocating more memory (using magiclauncher) and changing settings in optifine, and I have not noticed much of an increase. I use Linux for minecraft because, even with the poor fps, it still runs better on Linux than my Windows partition (which is loaded with junk anyway). Ideally, I would like to keep my framerate at about 25fps no matter where I'm looking or how long I've been there. Does anyone know a possible fix for this problem before I decide to re-install everything down to the OS?
2. Issue #2-Wacky textures and skyboxes- I have a feeling that this may be related to my previous problem. Any texture pack I use, other than normal, mobs appear strange, like there are multiple textures used for them, like having a door on their arm, I will try to upload pictures of this. At times, they will be missing arms, legs, bodies, ect. Sometimes, when I walk into an area in which an un-rendered area is visible, chunks of the map will appear flat in the sky (again I will try to post pictures). I think this might be a glitch with Magic Launcher or Optifine. Does anyone know what causes this?
3. Issue #3- Sticky movement buttons. Every now and again, I will be moving somewhere and then, when I let go of a movement button, I still continue to move in that direction until I double click that movement button again. This has caused me to walk off cliffs, into lava, and into the face of creepers, none of which I responded to nicely. Does anyone know a fix to this problem?
4. Issue #4- Movecraft Download. Something that appealed to me about the PC version of MInecraft is Movecraft. I decided to make a Bukket server for me and my friends on a separate computer and had successfully set it up completely, however, I cannot find the Movecraft download for 1.4.7, only for 1.2.5. I know a version must exist for 1.4.7 because I have played on 1.4.7 Movecraft servers before that work exactly the same. Does anyone know where I could download this?
I know there are a lot of issues I am having and could probably span over multiple forum posts, but I decided that this would be an easier way to convey my problems for everyone. If anyone knows a solution to any of these problems, I will be greatly appreciative
I know the answer to your texture pack problem - your graphics card is simply not dedicated enough to run a 64X64 texture pack. The tolerance a computer has for a texture pack is usually not determined by how good its processor is, but by how good its graphics card is.
Quickest fix to that problem: Get a better graphics card.

Well the problem is, i can't upgrade a graphics card on a laptop, unfortunately and I mentioned processors because the integrated card on an i5 is integrated with the processor, I think. I wouldn't think the graphics card alone was the problem because I have played far more demanding games with less problems. Here are the pictures I promised:
