I've been trying to make my minecraft client modded. I haven't paid for minecraft yet... havent goten around to it... and i've just been playing offline; no username or anything. I tryed to download the modloader and put the zip file in to minecraft.jar and then put in the mod of my choice in the created "mods" file. all it did was not allow me to use the offline game anymore. any solutions?

You need to buy the game to get mods to work. Notch required all mods to be coded not to work for non-paid minecraft accounts.

:/ well aint that just a waste of my time... guess i'll buy the game.
