Updating Minecraft - Done Loading / Display Frozen

Hello,
My child added mods and now minecraft will not open.
Display is frozen and reads "Updating Minecraft - Done Loading" however the green load bar is not quite to complete 100%.
I am not sure what he tried to download. Please advise, if needed can oringinal defaults be reinstalled.
