after installing mod loader, application will not start. Fatal error whether running update or not. Please help if this makes sense... Thank you!

You have installed Forge for 1.4.6 rather than 1.4.7

OK, thanks! I installed the correct Forge file (1.4.7) and I no longer get an error when starting minecraft WITHOUT updating, however it still wont open. It just goes through FML startup (which seems to finish ok) and then sits on a black window. IF I try starting minecraft and accept the Update offer, I still get a "Fatal Error occurred (4)" in minecraft.jar.
