Mods don't do anything?

I installed TooManyItems using the instructions, but it didn't change Minecraft at all! I dragged all the .class files, I deleted META-INF, and I put the files into minecraft.jar. Can anyone tell me why this didn't work? In case it matters, I'm using a Windows 8.

Make sure that you did not disabled tmi. Try pressing the 'o' key in the inventory.
