I am using magic launcher and using the advanced set up am able to allocate 4096 gigz, half of my computers ram. When playing in game I'm seeing lag spikes out of nowhere and I have no idea why. I also notice my computer in general loads slower on other programs. I go to ctrl+alt+delete to check the management of my memory and I see java is using over 6 gigs.
Why is it using 2 more gigs than that I have allocated? I'm fearing my computer is going to crap itself when the game and java itself is using that much memory.
Any help would be great in solving this, I'd also like to figure out a way if it is at all possible to put a cap on java's memory usage since it likes to be a run away train and use more than it's suppose to.
First, make sure you don't have any other java programs running.
You are telling it that it can use 4g for minecraft, but another java program running could make it use more.
Second uninstall java, and reinstall the latest version from here: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
Go into windows remove program feature and remove all the java installs listed.
hmm... I don't think I have any other java's programs running, besides the flash player but that is used in the internet browser and I usually don't visit sites that use that. I also updated recently to the latest version and removed all other instances of installs of Java on my rig. I only noticed the huge memory usage when I recently visited the nether and stayed for a long period of time. Cause usually the game stays at around 2.5 gigs of memory usage unless I'm in an area that needs heavy loading.
