Okay I have a decent cpu that can run vanilla minecraft at max settings, with a 64 bit texture pack, on my own lan server, with explosions, a ton of mobs and only be at 8% pc usage while running upwards of 40 fps.
So why do I get "Minecraft has run out of memory" on technic, tekkit, yogbox etc... on the lowest possible settings: tiny render, no shading, advanced open gl fast, no animations, and lowest detail settings?[optifine as well] when task manager says that it too is using 8% pc usage.
This error even occurs in the main menu when. Sometimes without prompt, without fail if I change a video setting.
Firstly I upgraded to windows 8 (which has nothing to do with the issue it was happening in 7 as well) so I don't yet know how to assign priority to programs. My computer has 8 gigs of ram and my graphics card has a gig of dedicated memory
I changed it to 1536 MB and it is at least playable, but it buffers every couple seconds if I move no more than 6-8 fps and even the menu is still laggy, no memory crashes though.
Tekkit has alot of memory leaks, and is generally just an outdated client to use.
Don't expect any updates anytime soon.
1 gb should be more then enough. Although, I recommend FeedTheBeast as it is much better managed, has a working support, and is overall better then it's inferior counterpart. Although calling Tekkit an inferior counterpart is too kind.
Allow me to use an analogy for Tekkit Vs FeedTheBeast
Tekkit = A Turd.
Feed the beast = The beautiful Stallion that took that turd.

I also had this problem. You need to limit how much memory Tekkit can hog, so that the rest of your system can keep working smoothly. Drop your memory allocation down to 512MB.

Moderatorthe more you have the more chunks that are kept in memory and the more memory needed

Retired StaffYou don't have to play rules lawyer and derail a thread to prove you're an idiot.
Try putting it at 4gb
