Ohhh my god, let me just start off by saying I'm so sorry. I know this topic has been brought up multiple times, but the people who brought it up had different issues than I did, and the solutions never worked for me. Please don't murder me!
So, today after many months without ever installing mods, I decided to try out a few of them I kept seeing that were really interesting to me. Too Many Items happens to be one of them, but was the last mod I added... All of the others worked fine and I was careful to backup Minecraft, exit and re-open it every time I added a new mod, and have ALL updated versions of the mods I downloaded.
I downloaded the following:
MoCreatures
Forge (Required for the MoCreatures mod)
API (Required for the MoCreatures mod)
Custom Mob Spawner (Required for the MoCreatures mod, AGAIN)
Enchanting Plus
And of course, the source of all my issues, the Too Many Items mod.
I'm using WinRAR to modify the .jar file, not 7zip, and I do not have ModLoader installed.
I was tired so don't hurt me for this part, but when I first downloaded TMI I noticed the instructions said to add the files to the .jar file, but I wasn't sure if Forge could run it too, so like a complete idiot I put the files in both the mod folder and the .jar file.
I KNOW, I'M STUPID. So after I did that, Forge moaned at me like "you have multiple copies of files, what are you doing?" so I finally started functioning less like a noob, and deleted TMI from the mod folder.
Afterwards, thinking everything was dandy, I opened up Minecraft and this time it stayed at a black screen for 10 whole minutes after showing that "Mojang" bit. Maybe I'm just impatient, but Minecraft runs for me like no problem so I'm pretty sure that's not the case, and I blame TMI.
SO, I looked it up and found some instructions for the problem to delete the bin folder, run Minecraft to recreate it, then add the .class files to the .jar file once again.
That did nothing, although Minecraft loads properly now, TMI does not.
I'm not sure if TMI is incompatable with Forge, or any of the mods I downloaded, but I did see it working fine and dandy with one of the mods I downloaded on some YouTube video...
I really don't know.
Don't you dare say anything about the META-INF folder. I deleted that folder so hard my computer would cry if you asked about it.
