Go to %appdata% and backup your .minecraft folder. Then rename or delete your .minecraft folder and try running the Minecraft launcher. It should then update.
Or as Shadow1426 mentioned, you might already be running the latest version. You can check this in the main menu. It should currently say 1.4.4 if you are on the latest version.

I CURRENTLY HAVE 1.3.2 AND I TRIED TO FORCE UPDATE AND IT HASNT WORKED BUT I HAVENT TRIED TO BACKUP MY MINECRAFT AND RUN THE LAUNCHER YET BUT ILL TRY IT THANK YOU FOR RESPONDING
ok so i tried making a backup and running the launch progran and it still wont work it keeps going to the page where it says login failed try again or play offline
You need to force update. Click the options button in the launcher, and press 'Force Update".
This will force the game to update to the latest version. Beware though, this will get rid of all your mods, so be prepared.
