Ive given up trying to fix minecraft on my macbook. On to my pc.....
I use magic launcher with a minimap and single player commands.
I have always used optifine because everyone says it gives you better graphics and more fps.
I was wondering why my pretty decent gaming rig only ran MC at 16 fps or so.
Turn off optifine, voila, 100+ fps.
Whats up with that?
I have cranked down some of the video settings when using optifine. The only one i usually use with optifine is the one to set render distance to extreme.

Optifine HD A7 (but the previous ones did the same thing)
Im using java 64 with 64 bit windows
I have 8G RAM
MSI 7870 Graphics card
i-7 3770k processor

Retired StaffIt can take some time to fine tune it to the performance and quality.
Obviously you don't have a low end system, but if you take a look at this thread it shows you many of the settings that is recommended to increase performance on lower end systems. : http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1342544-guidehow-to-increase-fps-v17-now-with-video/
