well, the default skin is steve(you can look it up on google if you dont know who that is). In order to change this, you can look up some new skins, or design your own on novaskin.me. In order to change this, you need to login on minecraft.net and hit the profile tab. The website explain it from there on. Good luck!
What do you mean why is it like this? I bet you're using a cracked launcher :C .. Its like this because the skin on the character name is already edited and uploaded to minecraft.net under profile.
