It might just be me being stupid (happens alot.) But ever since the 1.4.2 update all the passive mobs are always spawning in groups of 4 and seem to spawn in an unusual abundance (e.g. squids, cows, pigs, etc.) I could get pics if they're needed for comparison.
My minecraft was modded with about 55 mods, so I figured that could have had something to do with it, so i deleted the entire .minecraft folder and let minecraft re-download and played without any mods/launchers/APIs/etc. but the problem still persisted.
Is this just some feature i missed on the 1.4.2 update checklist or is this not supposed to happen? Either way, i'd like to somehow get my spawn rates back to normal because i don't remember it being like this in 1.3.2, so any help would be appreciated. I wasn't sure if this fell under the modded or unmodded category seeing as how my game has been modded in the past, but i decided it would be safer to post it here.
Random Info:
- Using regular minecraft launcher (but used magic launcher when i had mods installed.)
- Would like to go back to using mods.
- Has not edited any core files or changed any configurations (Post-Mods).
- Has been using creative mode, normal difficulty for testing. Has also tried survival and hardcore modes with same results.
- Has tested on multiple computers.
- Has tried using old saves (1.3.2) with same results.
- Hostile mob spawners (e.g. skeletons, spiders, zombies) seem to work properly.
EDIT: Just to clarify, all the mods i was using were/are 1.4.2 compatible.
It may be possible that the spawning algorithm was tweaked a bit between versions. This is not necessarily a bug. I have noticed large amounts of passive mobs spawning in certain areas as well so I'm inclined to think this is part of the update.
I've noticed it quite a bit. I think it's a vanilla coding change feature. Unless one of the mods says it messes with spawning algorithms or adds new mobs (Passive, not hostile or villagers) then it is vanilla.

It persisted after he got rid of all of his mods though so I'm pretty sure it's just a change in the code

Because why get one of something when you could get one hundred?
