I've promised my 8 year old that he can earn mods by doing well in school weekly. He's doing great and earning mods, but I've run int a problem. I installed TooManyItems just fine (after a lot of reserach and hair pulling).
Now I'm trying to insall the tonado mod. I've installed Forge and the tornado mod, but it's not working. The game works, just no tornados when we follow the recie and craft them.
As of right now, the craftable eggs and Gulliver mods aren't updated for the newest version of Minecraft.
If you look in the title of the thread on those mods, it says "[1.3.2]" which means it's for that Minecraft version. You can find the version of Minecraft that you are using by opening Minecraft and looking in the bottom left corner. If you do that, you can see that the current version is 1.4.2. Mods for previous versions of Minecraft will not work with newer versions.

It might be easier to use a program that installs mods for you, such as MultiMC. With this program, it's all drag and drop, so you don't have to deal with installing anything yourself.

Thanks. I'd rather go forward with manual installation as I've spent tons of time learning how to do it and don't want to learn another program.
Advice?
MultiMC is way simple, and it gives you a nice error log you can post here when you have problems. Regardless, I don't see any Tornado mods for 1.4.2 -- share the link so we can be looking at the same thing. Are you getting these from another site? Sites like minecraftmine, minecraftdl, and a few others tend to post bad information and bad downloads to get adfly money. Trust only minecraftforum and planetminecraft..
Which tab would I put it in? jar mods? core mods? ...?
Aha. This one's got an extra step. You have to open the tornadoes.zip.. In there you will find 2 zip files, coroAI and Weather 1.22. Load both of those into the mods tab.
I've never used MultiMC, but I have to say this, you seem like a pretty awesome mom.
Thanks. He needed some motivation, kid is crazy smart but doesn't care at all about grades or doing well in school. He cares A LOT about Minecraft, so it just made sense to use it as incentive. I'm know very little about computers, but I'm determined. Ha. He went from missing 8 out of 10 spelling words to getting them all right.
Yes, I totally should have sorted out the "how to" part of it before hand, but the idea hit me and flew out of my mouth.
Thanks for everyone's help!! I imagine I'll be here picking brains a lot.
That's cute how you said "you just..." as if it would make sense to me. Flattering.
Off to figure out what that means. lol
I've watched you get this far, so I'm confident you know how to copy files! There's nothing special about them, just a good old-fashioned copy and paste from the original .minecraft directory to the one that MultiMC created.
Got things copied to the folder they need to be in, but get a white screen when trying to open.
When trying to open Minecraft, or trying to load the world? If you're still using MultiMC, go into Settings, under the Error Console tab, and check the "Show console while an instance is running" box and post the output of that when you get the white screen.
Can only make 2 more posts today as I'm new with restrictions, but have to say:
I DID IT!!!!! I am feeling like quite the smarty pants. Got his existing world all loaded and working in MultiMC. Surely things will be smooth sailing form here (ha ha ha)
Again, thank you all so much.
At first, I was just copying his saves, but it dawned on me that the instance folder I was copying them in to was empty, so I thought to create a new instance, load and open MC and then go back and copy/paste the saves. (So, I just needed to download MC before throwing existing worlds into empty files)
I know I haven't used the correct terms and am probably making little sense, but it works and I'm thrilled. I've learned so much about Minecraft over the last two days, my son is happy with his weirdo mom.

Anyone care to help a mom hook up her kid?

On to a new problem? Can I open his existing worlds with MultiMC?
And you should ask for better grades if he wants more complicated mods.

Curse PremiumYou just have to copy the worlds from saves folder in the original Minecraft location over to the MultiMC instance location.
