I'm having a weird issue when I "save and quit" the game. The issue being that 95% of the time it won't actually save my progress and will revert everything I've done last time I was playing. I use 2 mods currently, Optifine HD U A7 for 1.4.2, and the newest version of TooManyItems. I've narrowed it down to knowing the issue is with Optifine by doing some testing with default client and client with only too many items.
I use a amd 64 athlon x2 dual core processor (minecraft set to 1 core to fix some lag issues), and windows xp media. I have tried everything I can think of to fix it including starting with a fresh .minecraft folder. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Most of the time it's actually a write protection thing. Either your AV or the OS itself, don't like the way the game is writing files to the default location.
Most of the time, using a 3rd party launcher, like MultiMC, will fix the issue, because it moves the install out of the roaming folder. (As long as you don't point it back at the default location)
Thank you so much hidinginthelight, that seems to have solved my problem!
Edit: cancel that, seems it's still doing it. first impressions were promising and it was working great, but for some reason it just reverted a big area that I dug out, yet I still have all the material that I got from it in my inventory and it actually logged me back in where I logged out this time. So it's not saving the changes made to the world for some reason....
There is a bit of a bug in MultiMC right now. Forge shows up as Minecraft Coders Pack.. But that's really the forge installation.
You can see my optifine right below that.
When you are on the jar tab, there is the forge button on the right hand side.
Select either the recommended or the latest version (Some mods will require the latest version, but most of the time recommended is the way to go)
Finally you put the 2 files you need for NEI in the core mods tab.
I just tried it with a default client and using the launcher you suggested. unfortunately it's still doing the same thing and I am completely baffled as to why. I did several hours of testing with using only toomanyitems, only optifine, both combined, installing one before the other, and just the default client, and for most of the testing only the clients that used optifine was getting the glitch with not saving progress... until just now when I was gonna try to play with default client settings to see if I could get it to a point of being playable and it still did the same thing.
But to go further into it I noticed that it's using the blocks in my inventory and it saves that, but it won't save them actually being placed in the world, yet after re-logging once and seeing nothing I did saved except my inventory state, I re-logged again and one of the items I put down (a jack-o-lantern) appeared. Another odd thing I noticed was that when I waited 10-15 seconds between re-logging it would save what I've done about 90% of the time.
I did update java just to make sure that wasn't the issue and I'm gonna do some more testing in a few with the default client and not using multi-mc.
did some looking around and i found some threads about people having this issue in 1.3.2 and found out that you can fix it by running in compatibility mode. while it does make things a bit more laggy, it does actually save everything now. still wouldn't mind finding a fix for it outside of running in compatibility mode but this will work for now.

Retired StaffYou could the NEI (Not enough Items) instead. http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/909223-125142-smp-chickenbones-mods/
It requires Forge, but MultiMC lets you added forge in from it's add mods pop up.
Here I was a bit bored this morning and put together some screen shots.
