I've been using MC Patcher to get HD Textures in 1.3.2. I'd adverage about 100-120 FPS even when using 256x TPs. With the new 1.4.2 update today, I tried to use MC Patcher but it instead deleted the minecraft.jar and replaced minecraft-1.4.2.jar with minecraft-1.3.2.jar. This was with he latest version. I then installed the new Optifine Ultra for 1.4.2 manually. All the .class files are there and META-INF is deleted. I got my usual 100+ FPS when using default. I installed the 256x version of PureBDcraft and my FPS dropped to about 20. I played for a while on default and monkeyed with Optiine's options but couldn't find anything that looked as though it would help. I proceeded to install Rei's Minimap, the mod I missed even more than MCP. Just now, I tried using Misa's 64x TP and still dropped from 100 to 20 FPS. Not sure why this happens. I just want to know if it's my hardware or something I did wrong somewhere. Also, running Minecraft from a batch file that ups the RAM allowance to 8GB doesn't seem to make a difference.
Okay. The A7 update today helped Misa's out and gave me 25-30 FPS but PureBDcraft dropped to a 15-20 FPS average. I doubt it's hardware because of my experience with 1.3.2 and because this PC runs Battlefield 3 on Ultra settings @ 60FPS.
Battlefield is a totally different game using a totally different engine to run so it can't be used as a comparison,
Higher res textures will always slow the system down a little as the system has to do more work to display them.
Try using a different optifine to help give a higher fps
I think Ultra is the only one for 1.4.2 (last I checked). Anyway, I'm using Kahr's version of MCpatcher which worked wonders. 180 FPS with PureBDcraft 256x. I still want to figure out Optifine, though. I really like the mipmaping and zoom stuff.
PC specs:
i7-3370 @ 3.40 GHZ
16GB DDR3 RAM @ 1600 MHZ
GTX 460 PNY Enthusiast Edition
2TB HDD @ 5400 RPM
Windows 7 64 bit.
All my drivers seem to be up to date.

FPS boost
- Doubling the FPS is common
- Decreases lag spikes and smooths gameplay
