I'm new to this whole modification thing, and I've been looking for the MC Patcher so I can install an HD texture pack. However, every single link I find for it on the forums leads me to an "I'm Sorry!" page, saying that the content cannot be found. Can anyone help me out, please? I'd rather not use an outside client if I don't have to, particularly considering so few of them claim to have Mac OSx support on them...
I tried the Optifine and added it as a mod, but when I try to apply the HD textures, it still gives me the issues with fire showing up where it shouldn't and the textures being put where they shouldn't be. Did I skip a step? Is there something I have to do to get the textures applied?

It could be the version of optifine that you downloaded.
I've never quite understood which version is best. Sometimes multicore works better for me, some times standard.

Retired StaffMultiMC works just great on MacOS.
You can use optifine to add HD texture support with out MultiMC if that's what you'd rather do.
