Am not sure if it's supposed to be this way or if I inadvertently caused it (I greatly suspect the latter but I have no recollection of creating a dup file within the bin; perhaps a mod did it?) -- but inside my bin file I have two files of identical size: "minecraft" and "minecraft-1.3.2"
Which file is the game looking for? Should I delete one of 'em? If so, which?
I suspect you have used a utility like mcpatcher, which will create a backup copy of the minecraft.jar file, named after the version of Minecraft it detects.

Thank you, that makes sense. I did recently apply MCpatcher, ModLoader, a couple very simple mods and Optifine medium. The process was terribly difficult but I finally manged.
I notice in the mod forum some mods seem to have faded into history. I wanted to use the "chisel mod" but every attempt I made ended in failure. Don't know if it's feasible or not but it would nice to have all the dead mods removed.
If you take out both and then force update, the original one will resurface. I’m not making any guarantees, so back up just in case. whenever you take any advice from the forums, back up.

Don’t quote me. And Don’t quote me on not wanting to be quoted either.

Ahhhh... that's cool. Glad to know it; thank you.
