I know... Strange title. And believe it or not, that is exactly what is happening to me. No matter how many different maps I start anew, all the leaves on all the trees disappear after they all decay and drop apples and saplings. The moment the chunks are loaded with the trees and leaves, they all slowly die.
There must be a way to set the configuration for the distance the leaves decay from the distance of the wood. Somehow I think mine has been reset to 0.

All the leaves decay and leave behind a forest of wood. I don't even touch the wood. The leaves decay entirely on their own.
Even when I create a tree, it looks perfect for about a minute or so, then all the leaves decay leaving behind the wood. Naked. Ugly.
I end up griefing my own personal maps by doing nothing but loading the map and standing there watching all the leaves decay. I'm sure you would have a problem with that.

I have around 20 mods installed. I know one is conflicting, even though the game runs perfect, no glitches whatsoever. Well, except for that one. It was a difficult process in itself to get them all working. I just didn't want to start from scratch since the majority of those mods were directly installed within the minecraft.jar file itself. I don't even have a clue which mod is producing this weird occurrence other than the big trees mod and the timber mod. Both work perfect in the game. Its just a weird thing...
I should add that this is my Forge only build on .minecraft. No modloader, no MCPatcher, No Magiclauncer. My build is: Optifine, Fancy Fences, ReiMinimap, Too Many Items, More Explosives, Painting selection GUI, Hanabi fireworks, light sensor, RecipeBook, Better shelves, SpawnerGUI, Superior Enchanting, Runic Dust, Wireless Redstone, TF2Sentry, Printerblock, Better blocks, Big Trees and Timber mod build.
I have several different .minecraft builds that I enjoy, but this one is great.
LOL...
Thought it would be easier to find the control for the decay distance of trees than going through the nightmare to get those all working and getting great framerates. Its smooth as glass running all those. And looks absolutely gorgeous with the Sphax texture pack.
So I started a new map, and this crap happens.
Just thought there may be some way to change one control in the game that got buggered up.

Do any of them edit Biome Generation or World Gen in ANY Way? (Such as new biomes?)

The only one I can think of is the Big Trees mod. Its an awesome mod, but if this happens... Its not so awesome. When new worlds are generated, huge trees are everywhere. I have that mod working in other .minecraft builds, so I'm not entirely positive what mod is causing this. The Better World Generator could also be the cause. (forgot to mention that one)
Looks like I'm in for a nightmare of installations again. Oh well. lol

I've narrowed it down specifically and its not the mod you'd think. I bet you can replicate this easily.
On a fresh installation, I installed Skdaz's Installer of Fancy fences mod. This installs a good working version of Forge as well. Ran Minecraft, waited for the leaves... nothing. Works great.
Next I installed Optifine into the minecraft.jar. First I installed Optifine_1.3.2_HD_U_B2 After that B3. (if I install B3 only, I get a black screen)
Ran it, works like magic. Perfect so far.
Next I installed TooManyItems2012_08_16_1.3.2 directly into the minecraft.jar. Started up Minecraft, everything looks good... TMI looks good... but wait,.... there it is. The leaves are all dying.
So its the version of TMI that causes this. Bet you weren't expecting that mod to do that.
Try it yourself to see if you get the same results.

Well, its 2hours later, and I succeeded in installing them all and its working just fine. Some of the mods I missed to mention was More enchantments, Better Blocks and Items, Endermen Don't pickup Blocks and the best mod of all, Sideways log fix. The fix makes it so the wood blocks can't get placed on the side unless you crouch first. Which was annoying to say the least.
Took altogether 4 hours to get it to work right.
Even though Forge says it doesn't need modloader, when it came to TMI, it still needs modloader to run. Without it, well... leaves die. Tried to install Not Enough Items, but that just didn't install right. I've got it working on a couple of other .minecraft builds, but it was a no-go on this one.

I don't know, but even though I got my build to work well, I realized later that this may be the ultimate stealth griefing tool. Don't know if it works in multiplayer, but imagine if it did...
Just by entering a world, all the leaves disappear. So many people people use leaves to decorate their world. Some even use the leaves on the trees to navigate through their world. This "glitch" would destroy all the leaf blocks in the world without doing anything.
If it doesn't, it will destroy your own builds. I'm not supporting griefing! Just thought that this was a unique way to accomplish this. I just merely stumbled upon it.
