That sounds like your computer is overheating or lacks memory and locks itself up due to that.

Overheating maybe, it does tend to happen in repition when I retry it. Though I have 82Gb of memory left so I doubt its that. Though also to note my computer is only getting 36mps when it should be getting 100, so this maybe another side effect of what could be a virus...

Memory as in Ram wise.

I have 3GB of Ram...

Please re-check all your cables and hard-ware to make sure nothing is loose. It is also probably a good idea to check your drivers for anything required to be updated. (Mobo, Video Card, anything that may require updating.)

I deleted my temporary minecraft files and redownloaded them, but now that I look for them there are no longer any minecraft files there...

Everytime I go to dig for lava to store in my buckets, I dig as far down as I can then I fall through the map for some reason. Why is this?

in infdev/alpha, there's no longer a lava bottom but the admin block bottom
if you want lava, dig several blocks higher and expand sideways from there (if you hate digging after a while, use natural cave systems to find lava springs)

and if you use alpha try to HOLD the buton down

you must use alpha anyway

As above user stated, alpha implants a new system of destroying blocks in which you need to hold down the button to destroy them.

I'm not going to be updating this FAQ for a long time.

Did notch address this issue with the game freezing and crashing, had the game for about a month and still not working. Any information would be helpful, besides from saying " Read the FAQ". The posts are mostly the same, "Game keeps crashing/freezing". Make a sticky addressing the problem and/or have no clue what is causing this.

i downloaded minecraft.exe which isnt really a .exe but anyways no matter how i rename it
i get an error saying "Could Not Launch Java Virtual Machine"

Take a screenshot of the error if you can.

Also this FAQ is very old and mainly for classic, i'm not going to bother to update any of this anymore. Someone else take over.

I bought the game but I cannot figure out how to play survival. the only thing i can do is run around and kill animals. I bought the game for the Survival mode where I have to build a shelter for the night then gather resources like wood, gravel, sand metal etc and use them to craft items. When I play in Alpha I cannot destroy blocks to make a shelter or to gather resources. how do I get to this game mode?

Hold down the left mouse button, destroying items are different than creative.

Are there any problems on the main Minecraft site? I can't registern an account for some reason . The captcha and place to type it seem to be missing from the form.

Yes, reCAPTCHA seems to be having some trouble I think.

Edit: Actually, it seems to be okay again for me.

Not me I still can't see the blame thing to register. Anyway I can contact a mod so they could register me?

There is only Notch and he is far too busy to deal with silly things like registering people.

Can you post the URL you tried to register from, also can you try to access http://www.recaptcha.org/ and http://api-secure.recaptcha.net/
