Force updating clears anything done to Minecraft's files. It will remove any installed mods.
To force update, open the launcher. Then before logging in, click options, then force update.
LWJGL
Minecraft uses LWJGL (Lightweight Java Game Library). Minecraft ships with an old version, which sometimes means there are issues with keyboard input (especially on Linux systems). This usually can be fixed by updating LWJGL.
More information (such as how to manually update) over at this thread.
Re-installing
Sometimes force updating just doesn't cut it. There's a few other files that can sometimes get messed up. To reinstall Minecraft, you need to open your Minecraft data folder and delete the bin, resources, stats, and texturepacks folders and the options.txt file. All that should be left are saves and possibly the lastlogin file.
Downgrading
Sometimes, you'll update before your favorite server does, or maybe there's a version specific bug with the current version. Whatever the reason, sometimes you just have to downgrade.
To do so, download the version jar you want.
WARNING: only download jars from assets.minecraft.net. All other links are in violation of copyright law. Posting them on these forums will result in an infraction being given.
You then open your Minecraft data folder (more info over at the general information section), then open the bin folder. You then need to rename the minecraft.jar in there to something else, then drag the new one in. If all goes well, you are now downgraded!
Upgrading
Sometimes issues arise while upgrading. Typically a force update clears them up. If that doesn't work, you might need to reinstall Minecraft.
Connection Problems
Can't connect to minecraft.net
Current status of the login server:
If it's down, just wait a bit. It should be back within an hour.
If you have just purchased the game and are still not premium, wait ~24 hours.
If it has been longer than 24 hours, confirm that they payment has gone through.
Login failed
Login failed can mean two things. One is that you typed your username/password incorrectly. The other is that you do not yet have a username linked to your account (you just purchased Minecraft).
More information for all of these problems can be found at this site.
Crashes
Black Screen
If you were attempting to install a mod, you probably messed up somewhere and should force update and try again.
Sometimes if you install a mod and leave some items in a chest, the game will crash if you try to open that chest again.
To get rid of the crash you can either reinstall the mod (if possible) or break the chest over lava. This will destroy all items in the chest and the game will crash when the chest breaks. When you log back in, the problem should be gone.
hs_err_pid error
There are many possible causes to this error.
Frequently, this error indicates an issue with your graphics card drivers. Check the website of the person who made your graphics card to see if there are any updates.
It could also mean that you need to use the 64 bit version of Java. You can get it from here.
Lag
If you are getting huge amounts of lag, here is the configuration for the most possible FPS:
Graphics: Fast
Smooth lighting: off
GUI scale: auto
Render Distance: tiny
Performace: Max FPS / Balanced
Advanced OpenGL: off
Another option is to close everything that you do not need open.
Another possiblity is to install Optifine. It usually greatly increases performance.
If none of the previous things work, you might just need to upgrade your computer.
Note: adding more RAM to vanilla Minecraft has been proven to hurt performance unless you are running a very HD texture pack.
General Information
The Data Folder
The Data folder is the location where all of Minecraft's data is stored.
Windows XP
It is located at %APPDATA%\.minecraft. You can get to this folder by doing Windows Key and R, then typing that path in.
Windows Vista / Windows 7 / Windows 8
It is located at %APPDATA%\.minecraft. You can get to this folder by doing Windows Key and R, then typing that path in.
Mac OS 10.X.X - 10.7.X
You can find the Minecraft data folder at ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft
The ~ refers to your home folder, which you can access by pressing ⇧⌘H (or the shift key, command key, and H key all at once).
Mac OS 10.8.X
In Apple's attempt to make the operating system more secure from the end user, they hid the folder where the Minecraft data folder is stored.
You can find it at ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft, but the ~/Library folder is hidden. To unhide it, you need to open Terminal (you can do this by searching Terminal from Spotlight), then typing "chflags nohidden ~/Library" (without the quotes).

I need help, please. I bought the Minecraft game for our PC from a Gamestop. Downloading the game with the code off the card went well, and Minecraft Launcher says that I'm "ready to play Minecraft 1.6.4"; however, when I click on play it doesn't play the game. It seems to be trying to load the game, but it ultimately returns me to teh Minecraft Launcher 1.2.7 page. What do I do to play the game? I've never done this before.
i've been playing minecraft pe on my ipad mini for months and created a huge world with tons of houses and buildings. Now when i try and go into the world there is a huge lag and freezes. Has anyone else experienced this? How do i fix it?

I think there's a MCPE support section somewhere...
