How to install a snapshot, or "Snip snapping your way to success!"
This is a simple guide to downloading and installing snapshots. I don't know what else to say about this thread. Other than a famous quote from a famous captain:
"Read it to learn what it says."
-Captain Obvious
Step 1) Downsloading
Alright, it's not so slow. But you're going to need a snapshot to install the snapshot, right? So what you want to do is head over to the wiki, specifically here: http://www.minecraft...opment_versions
This is where the current snapshots are listed! The page comes complete with an addition summary, and bug list (though not complete)
As you can see it's set into 3 columns. Version, Date added, Summary, and Download links. Guess which one we want? (Be sure to check those bugs first, so you can be prepared for the worst.)
(PS: You want the client)
I'll wait while you download, take your time.
NOTE: If your file turns into a .zip file, check out the second post. It has instructions on how to repair that problem (Experienced in Internet Explorer downloads)
Step 2a) You've been snapped, now where shall it go?
Now that you're done downloading....finally jeez some of us want to continue...
Now that you're done downloading, and you checked the current bug list. You're ready to "install" the file.
Your line: "But ADiGregorio! Where does it go?!"
That's easy! It goes in a hidden folder, that's in a hidden folder, that's in a folder! Don't worry, I am gonna hook you up phat! (ph phat not f fat)
Check out the highlighted text! "C:\Users\Anthony\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft"
Just be sure to swap out "Anthony" for your USER NAME (What you use to sign into windows)
Step 2b) Files files, where to place my files.
Okay, we've been snapped, we've checked the bug list, we've found the folder. Where does the file go?
Stay with me, we have to do some stuff before moving the file
It goes in that highlighted folder. Before we move it though, I think it would be a good idea to BACKUP your current file! So open up the "bin" folder and find the file called "minecraft.jar"
Rename that sucker to minecraft_stinkversion.jar (Or whatever you want...)
NOW!! You may move that file into the "bin" folder.
<><><><><><>MAKE A COPY OF THE FOLDER "Saves"<><><><><><>
In case you missed that last part:
MAKE A COPY OF THE FOLDER "Saves"
One last time, just in case:
MAKE A COPY OF THE FOLDER "Saves"
Alrighty, you're all set! Go ahead and close everything you have opened. And start up Minecraft!
Did I mention that you need to make a copy of the "saves" folder before starting Minecraft?

Welcome to the Subtorial! (That's trademarked by the way)
Well, you're here. So it's safe to assume you need some help because of that old sport "Internet Explorer". It seems he as explored afar, and found a way to turn .jar files into .zip files. Do not fret! For I have the cure to his witch doctor ways! Now, this tutorial is a little more "advanced" than the last. But it's still pretty simple!
Step 1) So you want to save, just like Jesus?
Well, since Jesus saves after every level. You're going to need to at least save THE level...
First things first, head to the wiki page I link to at the top of the first post. You know, the one that looks like this: http://www.minecraft...opment_versions
Go ahead and click on the client link, and when the little window pops up at the bottom of the screen, click the little arrow next to the "save" button.
After you select said arrow, choose "Save As"!
Step 2) The same problem is occurring you say? Looks can be deceiving!
Alright, here you are again. The little save window has opened, and it wants to make it a .zip file. This is because Internet Explorer has a heavy drinking problem, off the wagon and all that.
Anyway, as you can see my Explorer has found his pub as well. But, like any good drunkard, you can offer him suggestions. Only our drunk will listen!
All you have to do, is where it says "minecraft" for the file name. Well, tell the browser what it really is!
minecraft.jar
Pay no heed to his drop box stating otherwise, like I said he's drunk.
Once you tell him what's what. Go ahead and click "save" Remember, ignore the "save as type"
There you go, a fresh new .jar to use in the tutorial above.
**Credits!**
This was not my original subtorial! I had you dancing around a command prompt, because that's how I roll....son. Thanks to one of our wonderful moderators: The Fried Zombie (Go give him a star: http://www.minecraft...thefriedzombie/ )

Now that there are some questions! I will update this post here to be a FAQ! That way folks don't have to hunt through pages (assuming it ever gets to pages).
I will add only questions I am sure I have answered properly. So please, if you have an issue and I resolve it. Let me know, so I can add it to this post for future readers! (+1 rep given as a reward to these posts)
Q) How do I find out if I have a 64bit or 32bit system? A)
Open your start menu, in the search bar type: System
Under the "system" section of the window, second from the bottom we see: "System Type"
Mine, as you can tell, is a 64 bit.
Congratulations, you now know what version of Java and video drivers to get!
PS: This one was easy!
Q) How do I upgrade video card drivers? A)
Step 1) Video card drivers, or when poker meets golf!
Every good card, apparently, has a good driver. When drivers get old, they start drinking; that gets MADD involved and things get ugly.
Pixels start getting blurry, tunnel vision is less tunnely. You know, classic drunk stuff. These inhibitions can translate into Minecraft woe quickly. So to stop that, we make sure our driver is a under the legal age! The younger the better!!
Anyway, to the step! We first need to find out what kind of video card you have. Open up your start menu, and type in the search bar: device manager
**Note, if you do not have a search bar navigate to the control panel. Device manager will be located in there**
Notice the item I have highlighted, "Display adapters" That's fancy talk for "Video cards" go ahead and click the little arrow next to it.
As you can see, my video card is a NVIDIA GeForce GT 440
Minimize the device manager, we will need it in a second.
Step 2) More downsloading? I want to plaaaaaaay!!
Now to get you set up with a good driver. Video cards are set into two groups, ATI and NVIDIA
Make sure you get the version that goes with your operating system. (32 or 64 bit) If you're unsure what your computer is, check this post it has the answer you seek/
Minecraft Startup Issues: Q) I boot up minecraft, And it starts up but freezes when the updating game bar gets close to the end of the bar.
A) When starting Minecraft: Do not update. Just click "Not now" Also, if you are using mods make sure they are compatible with the snapshot. If you are running MCPatcher, make sure to "re-patch" the JAR
I move my original minecraft.jar into a backup folder, Which I created in the app data and have named in Backup files. I put my jar there. i then downloaded the snapshot, and placed it in the bin folder.
I boot up minecraft, And it starts up but freezes when the updating game bar gets close to the end of the bar. What am I doing wrong?

That's three mass invasions within the same bloody month! I mean, seriously! The UDTU is attacking now, Blue has a sleeper attack coming soon, and now an invasion by space pirates? What is this, Russia if every american-made FPS happened at once?! - MagicallyDwarven
Re-download and replace the jar (do not backup the current one, keep the backup you already have.)
When starting Minecraft: Do not update. Just click "Not now"
Also, if you are using mods make sure the are compatible with the snapshot. If you are running MCPatcher, make sure to "re-patch" the JAR
Wow, Thanks. I got past the downloading bar, By patching my jar. ( Didn't count that as a mod, My bad. ) But now all I'm getting is it booting up, and then a black screen.

I have had issues myself with MCPatcher. The "black screen" anyway.
Let me do some quick testing, and I will see what is causing the problem. (I think it is one of the extra "add-ons" like HDFonts.)
EDIT--
Alright I ran through the different settings, and I am no longer getting the black screen issue. However, I did notice when I selected "better grass" the load time (black screen) increased.
Option 1--
Turn off all add-ons except "HD-Textures" see if that fixes the screen. If it does, then exit Minecraft and start turning on the extras one at a time.
1. Yes, I do have Java 64 Bit, and it's the newest version.
2. No. I guess. But Mayby I'm lucky and it's some of this?: I have Intel Core i5-2410M 2.3 GHz
-NVIDA GeForce GT 540M, Up to 1760 MB TurboCache
-4 GB DDR3 Memory
-640 GB HDD
3. And No on this one.
I know exactly where to link my friends whenever we want to play the newest snapshot!
Glad I could be of service!
And remember, if anyone else using this tutorial runs into a snag. Please post a message here, or you can send me a private message via the site. Heck you can even hit me up on our IRC channel! (Again, I reference my mad skills) <---Arrogance, that's the best skill I display!
Hi ... you referred me here .. and I was looking around and saw the video card drivers ... problem though is mine is not nvidia or adi .. It says in the device manager "Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator 3150". Anything you can hook me up with?

Were not in trouble...yet. I need to know who makes your computer "Toshiba" "Sony" "Compaq" "Dell" (Etc) IBM?
Once we have that, maybe their support site will give us a heads up on what we need to do. (You made sure to get the proper "bit" version right? (64 or 32))

As for mods, MOST are not supported in snapshots. Be sure to check them all before installing them. Otherwise, I imagine they are installed the same way. (I have never used a mod, so I am pretty green in this area.)
