As the title says, using VMWare may cause your local Minecraft installation to be given the wrong IP due to the 'VMnet8' Network Adapter.
Unfortunately, I am not technically savvy-enough to give reasoning for this issue.
This guide will help you to allow your Single-player world to be used on a local area network (LAN).
(Disable the VMWare Network Adaptors in Control Panel. This will render all but bridged-VMs unable to use your network)
These instructions are available in a very simplified way and, if needed, may be changed for future reference. Bolded steps are for quick reference for the technically-minded whilst the grey text is for beginners or those unfamiliar with navigating Windows 7.
Important: Administrative privileges are required. Do not attempt this on a shared or server-based computer.

Open Network and Sharing Centre
This can be found by clicking the Start Orb and typing: Network and Sharing Centre. Alternatively: Start > Control Panel > Network and Sharing Centre.
Open Adaptor Settings
On the left-hand side of the window, click 'Change Adaptor Settings.'
Disable VMnet1 and VMnet1
Locate two adaptors with VMWare Network Adaptor VMnet8 / VMnet1 as the name.
Right-click on each one, individually, and click Disable.
(Optional) Change binding order
Whilst not needed in most cases, changing the order Windows uses network adaptors can help future networking issues be resolved much faster by forcing Windows to use (for example) LAN, then Wireless when accessing a network / The Internet. Press the ALT key on your keyboard and a 'hidden' menu will appear up top. Click Advanced > Advanced Settings and a list of adaptors will appear. A note for VPN/Hamachi/TeamView users: This may alter how your other programs work. Only do this step if you rarely use such applications. To undo anything above, simple go about the reverse order of this guide.
Windows XP users can still go about disabling these VMnet adaptors by going to Control Panel > Network Connections.
Launch Minecraft and Open to LAN your single-player map of choice. Barring any firewalls, your map should now work over your LAN.
