I have fix, at least for me.
If the CPU usage is 100% while playing Minecraft in a server, you need to do this:
Set the priority of Java from normal to High in task management (Ctrl-alt-del)
And tonight the lag disappeared for us. My friend hosting the server got an automatic Java update and for the moment it's working fine (even though I sometimes don't see his avatar, though I see everything he does, which makes it look like there's a poltergeist on the server).
Funny thing is we've both tried updating Java manually once or twice but that didn't help - tonight it did.
Though if I know Murphy's Law, it won't last.
Although everyone will have a slightly different solution to the lag problem, I have a feeling the periodic lag issue might be connected animal spawns. I too had crippling lag that was periodic in nature. Eventually, my host found out that deleting all squids on the map solved the problem. Apparently it's a known glitch, but squids can somehow spawn in the thousands under the sea and in underground caves and may be a huge factor in the lag issue for some people.

I host a server and my friends have this problem as well. Currently I am running a quad-core processor with 4 gigs of RAM on Win XP, and when the server and a local client are up on my machine I am not resource limited (ie plenty of CPU cycles and RAM are going unused). However, friends who connect to my server, even those in the same room connecting directly through the router, suffer lag such as accumulated delays and rubberbanding. I DO have an Atheros network adapter on my motherboard.

How could i go about deleteing all the squids?
Have your host delete them. I think mine used a command (perhaps through the hosting mod bukkit?) I'm not sure of the details, but I'm sure you could have them look it up on google.

my lag story sort of parts of.
when i logged onto friends server. i had terrible lag problems :sad.gif:
i solved it by downgrading my Java from the beta to current real one(whatever version is current) and now can connect and actually interact with the world !!
unfortunately my system seems to be slightly underpowered (C2D 2ghz, x3100 graphics) so i'm still not having pure minecraft joy, but better than before.
I too am experiencing this problem. I have a dual core 2.4ghz, 3gb ram and use windows vista.
I had my connection optimized using TCPoptimizer and I tried restoring it to windows defaults and it still didn't work.
This sucks because I bought the game exclusively to play on a multiplayer server with a mate.
Limiting squids with SquidLimiter (Bukkit mod) fixed the problem for my server.
No more laggy chests, chat and sometimes superlow fps, which affected the whole server.
I've had minecraft since january and I get this problem EVERY time I try to play online. The weird thing is, most of the time, the chat doesn't lag for me, but blocks reappear, delayed damaged, etc. AND other online games run perfectly fine with little lag, so I doubt it's my connection.
I already posted in two other posts complaining about this same issue, but this post seems to be the "main" one,
ill add my findings, if someone can answer my question below we may be able to test it, i know it sounds none related but something tells me this is it:
Guys I'm almost certain I'm on to something and i need your assistance on this...
I noticed that whenever i get this problem after a million tries it does work, and then after a while when i go back to play and log in to a server it returns for the next million attempts to correctly load the map,
BUT! i use a custom skin loaded on minecraft.net, i noticed that whenever i hit that certain precious moment that it is actually managing to load the map, my skin is not the custom skin but the default one, only for a brief few moments and then after the map loads it goes back to the custom one (no, uploading the default skin to minecraft.net wont do) its like it is failing at obtaining the custom skin from the network and it uses the default one on the client side (in the game itself, locally), at which time it manage to load the map correctly! there must be some kind of an issue with the order of things executed i the code
any of you JAR tweekers out there can tell me if there is a way to DISABLE the retrieval of skins from the one i uploaded in minecraft.net and force the client to use the default one on my local machine??
i am almost certain there is a coding error here and if we can disable that and test it we may find the solution at last, to this long lasting problem
I have this problem aswell, exept for me this happens:
1. I join ANY server
2. Everybody i see looks like they arent moving
3. When i try to break blocks they re-appear
4. after a minute i get kicked off server
5. i can no longer connect to servers, or the internet altogether, untill i restart my computer
This is VERY anoying, and i cant find a fix :sad.gif: i have a decent computer, and havent had these problems with any other game, im running on Windows XP, i dont know anything else about the machine as of now, unfortunatly,
mostly becuase ive never needed to know, becuase ive never had a problem with it. i love minecraft, but if this isnt fixed, its gonna get boring really fast :sad.gif: hope i helped in some way
Another update to my findings, which also validates my point even further, yesterday minecraft.net was down and the custom skin could not be loaded, after a whole week on not being able to load the entire map and having a lag... BAM multiplayer loads and running smoothly....
i'm still waiting for an answer to my question

Im thinking that this issue somehow involves permissions, (Not bukkit mod) on my Admin account on my Vista computer it works Fine! No lag Whatsoever BUT as soon as im on the alternative. Lag strikes. So im guessing this is some sorta of permissions issues not letting minecraft do something, or connect to the network properly. I dunno but i hope this helps! Make sure to say what account you were on when uploading your stuffs!
it is not a permission problem, if it was then it wouldn't work some of the times, it simply wouldn't work at all, or work correctly all the time... permissions are not magic, you either have them or not...
this is a loading problem from the network, specifically minecraft.net, and i believe the custom skin... i've had more than one chance to test it, i just wait for someone with the knowledge to tell us how to turn the pulling of custom skins from minecraft.net and force it to use the local default skin on the client itself.

come on guys! is there NO ONE who can answer my question?? i'm telling you it WILL fix the issue!
how do you disable skin loading from the net via minecraft.net so it will use the default local skin on your client??
i'm still waiting for an answer to my question

Which is odd considering I only get like 20-30fps on Far view distance anyway.
