I've been getting the same problems since the 1.4 update. The 1.5 update just came out, yet this lag issue doesn't seem to have been formally addressed by Notch yet (if anything, it's worse). SSP runs perfectly fine for me, this is only an issue with SMP.
I've been having the exact same problems mentioned at the first post
+ all mobs are passive (even zombies and skeletons) and i can move them by walking at them.
Posting a message in the chat takes about 3 minutes to appear.
And of course the most famous problems:
- Falling in the void every time i connect to a server (though i noticed that some servers, that claim to be professional and are located in my country don't have this problems)
-cannot mine : blocks simply return to their places (except in the specific servers mentioned above)
I hope or someone from Mojang will find this post. (BTW this issue was in versions 1.3, 1.4 and 1,5)
The server I play on has Dynamic Map installed, which has an IRC kind of thing built into it. When I'm lagging on the server, I would type something and it wouldn't appear on the Minecraft chat for at least a minute, BUUUUT it would appear instantly on the Dynamic Map. Also I found out that messages that appeared from other people on the MC chat appeared way before on the Dynamap.Thus...
When I'm lagging I look at the Dynamap when I'm trying to talk to people, but I'm not typing into it because I'm typing into the MC chat, which means it's neither me or the server. It's definitely in the coding somewhere.
- falling into the void after each login
- up to 2 minutes before text appears in chat
- extremely slow chunk loading
- rubberbanding
And the list goes on.
I was SO close to delete my whole PC just to see if it helps :biggrin.gif:
Maybe we should Twitter Notch/Mojang Staff this threadlink?
I think at this point anything we do will just fall on deaf ears.
Does anyone have any means to contact mojang directly, seeing as they clearly don't read this forum or any of the other places people have been posting.
This is getting ridiculous, not just because they haven't fixed it but they seem to have at no point acknowledged this problem. It is quite clearly the biggest issue with Minecraft right now and has been for some time.
All we want is an acknowledgement that they are working on it, how hard is that?
Also Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamp
Acknowledgment would be nice. I don't know if there's any good way to make them aware apart from getting as many people as possible to post the problem on 'get satisfaction.com' - even that may not matter though.

"A wise man washes his hands after he pees. A wiser man doesn't pee on his hands."
In agreement that this needs to be acknowledged by the developers because there is a big enough group of people affected by this that it needs to be looked into before it goes live.
I too am having this same problem, which has evolved since 1.5, and its the "rubberbanding" effect, 30sec-1min text lag and not to mention me placing blocks, them disappearing and then 30sec later reappearing and the list goes on. I do not get this in single player mode but i do, like many others, experience it in multiplayer mode only. Now the whole memory theory is interesting.. but ive had all these things happen when im in the server alone. Me and a friend of mine have been trying to find a solution to the problem; uninstalling/reinstalling Java, running a latency tester on the server, running it by browser/exe/jar etc. One thing im gonna be trying here soon is loading Linux Mint onto a USB or boot CD and booting using those and trying to run the game that way and see if the problem is Windows based or not. But one of the theories we have is, how many people out there having this problem are running SINGLE CORE processors? Are there people out there w/ dual-core or quad-core experiencing the same thing? Because, though im in serious need of an upgrade, im still running a P4 2.5ghz / 2gb RAM / 256mb nVidia GeForce 7800. Its about 8years old, which by industry standards is prehistoric, but when you look at the fact that dual-core processors have only been out since '05 i consider my pc only 6years old since it was near the top as far as fastest machine for its time.
Now the theory in question come into play of how games are designed today and the use of a dated single core processor. Since alot of games coming out now-a-days that put to use the hyperthreading capabilities of a multicore processor.. that kind of leaves single core users out in the cold, even on games that may look as '8bit' as this one. Could having a multicore use based game cause the 'lag' effects that people are experiencing or is it something else?
I make note of this too because out of the 4 people in the server im on, im the only one with a single core and the only one with the problem. Even my wife who runs a laptop 1.8dualcore w/ 1gb RAM runs it fine.

The box of my friend who is having this issue, dual core. Intel Celeron D at 2.8 GHz.
I've actually been helping Sarkli on this problem, i'm super interested to see if anyone has had this problem on a dual core or even a processor w/ hyper threading.
I think, based upon a java crash log file(not sure if its related), that i saw from sarkli, it seems like mincraft is programmed using a java virtual machine platform. This taken from error log
# A fatal error has been detected by the Java Runtime Environment:
#
# EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION (0xc0000005) at pc=0x05f7c059, pid=3740, tid=3616
#
# JRE version: 6.0_24-b07
# Java VM: Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (19.1-b02 mixed mode, sharing windows-x86 )
# Problematic frame:
# C [OpenAL32.dll+0xc059]
yes i think its wierd that the thing that crashed was actually the OpenAl driver which is audio, so i'm not sure if it's even related, but i find it interesting that the Platform is Java VM Java HotSpot Client VM (VM = virtual machine) I did submit the bug to java, we'll see if we get any where with that.
As far as i know (and i'm not an expert) the only systems that can handle a virtual machine correctly is processors that support hardware virtualization (ie. dual core, quad core & all the flavors) for anyone that has tried to "emulate" or use software virtualisation before the newer processors, you know that everything runs super slow no matter what you were trying to run. I think the same issue would be the case here. However I have no clue why the game would play correctly on single player and only have issues when you throw internet connectivity into the mess.
I haven't read everyone's posts but I whole heartedly agree that its not strictly a server/internet/client issue
Sarkli was running two computers on the same network using the same internet connection connected to the same server, we had 4 ppl on the server including him and he was the only one with issues.
Another interesting fact: when he moved or jumped we saw it instantly however when we jumped he saw nothing for 30secs to 1min, so this tells me that the issue somehow lies with the communication from server to client and not from client to server.
Oh and one more thing, just wondering if anyone had the problem on one operating system & either reinstalled the OS or used a different OS on the same hardware and then had no problem?

I have the same issue in 1.5.1, and none of the suggestions about turning off smooth lighting or limiting frame rate work. I log in to any SMP server, including my OWN, and i fall endlessly. Every now and then i will land on a tiny generated chunk, which i can not destroy any blocks (they reappear right after destroying). I have never got to play SMP before, ever since survival multiplayer came out I've had this issue.

I have been testing out the mod and the mod has a problem with breeding. First I tested the breeding and it worked. Now i breed my dogs with their cloths on and it crashes.

That could be your own ISP's fault. We're talking about 1.3+ (well at least for most people)

Laptops GENERALLY have less RAM, and desktops GENERALLY have more.
It's kinda funny how Mojang and Notch haven't even acknowledged this problem. Makes me really pissed.

Any thoughts?
It's been happening with multiple OSs.
I really must applaud the brainstorming going on in this thread. Hopefully Notch and Jeb catch wind of this problem.
Has anyone considered asking programmers from the Modding section for help?

How about the duel core theory? Anyone have the problem on a duel core?
...At least for me. Anyone else working fine now?
