I couldn't find any other topic about this, though it's not rare or hard to spot. It happens the same every time I ride a boat and it's hard to miss. Maybe it's something about my computer or operating system, but I have an unmodified client. I'm running vanilla minecraft 1.7.9 (started with 1.7.2) on Windows 7 x32, and have always had this problem, on single player as well as on all servers I have played on.
What happens:
When I ride a boat, my actual location changes at a rate different from my displayed location. The difference in the rate of change is specific, meaning if I travel in a straight line, the amount of dislocation increases with distance, and it never corrects itself. When I disembark from the boat on the opposite shore, I will land in the water near where it previously looked like I am, while the boat will appear to teleport a good distance away. This is displayed incorrectly, as is evidenced by my attempting to go to the boat and interact with it--nothing happens, the boat cannot be ridden or converted to a lootable item.
When I log out and back in, both me and the boat are displayed in our actual locations, which will tend to be a fair distance away from where we seemed to be before--the amount of distance being entirely dependent on how far I traveled in the boat. If I travel far enough, I will begin to see the edge of the loaded chunks getting closer and closer to where I appear to be.
This causes glitches including, but not necessarily limited to:
1.) unable to retrieve boat
2.) boat mysteriously breaking while not near land or obstacles/squid
3.) drowning while above water/on land/standing on top of boat
4.) reaching the edge of the loaded world
5.) unable to interact with environment
6.) unable to make boat move in open water
Once again, these aren't isolated, randomly-occuring events. They occur in a specific and entirely predictable fashion.

I want ocean content(thanks Möjang!), nether biomes, and savanna passive mobs.
This is the bug I mentioned: https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MC-2931
