I downloaded the Minecraft launcher today, for the first time. I'm running Ubuntu Linux 13.10. The launcher launched, and I was able to log into Minecraft to run the demo world, once.
When I try to go back in, I get to the Launcher 1.4.2 window, with Minecraft News showing. The window says, Welcome, guest! Please log in. Ready to download & play Minecraft 1.7.9.
There is a greyed out Play button and a greyed out Log Out button. The Profile (Default) dropdown, the New Profile and Edit Profile buttons are all active.
I started Minecraft with 'java -jar Minecraft.jar'.
The result in the console window is:

I've tried deleting my .minecraft directory with no luck.
I was having exactly the same problem, and merely editing the (default) profile, even without changing anything, worked for me, thanks for the suggestion!!!
I've tried all the suggestions but still have the same problem I'm on a hp windows laptop. please help
The above solutions didn't work for me either. What I did was go to Edit Profile and changed Use version to something other than Use Latest Version. After saving the settings a new screen popped up for me to log in. After logging in I changed my Use version back to Use Latest Version.
Having the same problem. I have not had minecraft on this machine before downloading the launcher today. Changing the profile does not fix it. Creating a new profile does not fix it. Changing the version does not fix it, even snapshots.
Thank you guys SO much! I uninstalled minecraft & java, downloaded them from a different browser, ran it as an admin, and when I hit my new profile it FINALLY let me login! Thank you!
