Setting my kids up on a new computer, logged into Mojanng and downloaded 1.7.9, ran it, and I get the launcher that says:
"Welcome Guest! Please log in."
But instead of a login button, there's a log out button, and it is greyed out (unclickable) as is the Play button. Screenshot attached.

I've already dumped the %appdata%.minecraft directory, installed Java... I can log in on the website but there's just no where to log in to the launcher. Already been through the profiles, on the profile editor tab I named the Version name the login name, Version says latest version but the Username says "(Not logged in)" and NOWHERE that I can find is there a space to enter the user name.
Getting pretty frustrated, any can help is greatly appreciated. Thanks
I am having this exact same problem, new computer for little minecrafter - and, yes, I have tried creating a new profile. Usually, you are able to click "play" and then it gives you a login screen but now the play button is not clickable. New computer with no previous version of MC. To test, I pulled my .minecraft folder out (on my laptop) and tried to get the launcher to regenerate it but the same thing happens there's a defaut profile and no way to log in.

Edit your profile and check the Executable location under Java Settings (Advanced).
If you don't know where the javaw.exe file is located, do a search for it, then change the location in your profile.
Once you have the correct location there, save the profile, then reload the launcher.
Edit: This is the location of my Java:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre7\bin\javaw.exe
If you have Windows 7 64 bit and installed to the default location, you can do a copy/paste of that first and see if that works.
Thank you, that worked for me.
