Its the Major here, and a very annoyed major at that. I tried playing Minecraft in LAN with my friends.
Here's what I did:
1. Opened Minecraft on all the PCs.
2. Opened a new world in Creative mode.
3. Went to the Game menu and clicked "Open to Lan."
4. Went to my friend's PC and clicked Multiplayer.
5. Clicked "Direct Connect"
5.Typed my IPv4 address in like this: "192.......:portnumber"
6. Said, "Ugh I hate this!"
(LOL)
It said something like "couldnt find hostname"
My network is hidden, is this the problem?
LAN networks shouldn't need to have any IP addresses typed in. If you open your world to LAN, and someone else on the same network clicks "multiplayer", they should see your LAN world pop up.

i know but still when i go to the bottom of the multiplayer section, it just says 'scanning for games on your local network and stys like that...

what version of minecraft are you using? If 1.7.9 (The version i'm using) i go to the game menu and press the "Start LAN world" button and i set the settings and i started the LAN world, my friend can join my world! But i don't know why it didn't work for you. OH YEAH! i forgot something i need to tell you which is the most important thing, when i started the LAN world my friend go to multiplayer and scroll down and he found my world and he joined it. Maybe is a bug maybe? Sometimes it didn't work for me too. Maybe a bug, try it again, or you are on another version! Hopes this helps!

Yeah, in that case, you'll have to create a server and port forward it. (Which is a pain)
