So if I ever can't get internet and want to play minecraft then I want to be able to play offline. For some reason I can't. I have tried disconnecting the internet, but then I can't log in. I tried logging in and then disconnecting. That does let me play with out internet work it means nothing if I have to have internet to log in...HELP! Oh and it will briefly flash the play offline button but I still have to have internet to log in. the launcher is 1.4.2
Yeah unfortunatly this is part of the new launcher. It is impossible for you to now play offline. I suggest using the old launcher and playing 1.5. Sorry but this is the only work around that i know of.
Well this is strange. I've been turning off the internet but it never worked. It somehow did launched earlier today without internet. If I can't manage to launch like this again then how do I change my launcher?

With Windows XP, launcher version 1.4.2, and Minecraft snapshot 14w18b, I can play offline just fine. (I just unplugged my gaming computer's net connection to confirm this). I have also not seen anything in the patch notes saying that offline play has been removed. Therefore, I believe the OP's issue is something else.

You could get the Technic Launcher, which also includes mod packs, like Tekkit and Voltz. You can lay offline perfectly with this. It also won't crash.
I had left my gaming computer disconnected from the network until a few minutes ago, after I unhooked it to test the OP's issue, and I've spent far too much of today playing Minecraft. Whatever his problem is, it's not some inability on the part of the 1.4.2 launcher, or any recent version of Minecraft (I tested with the latest snapshot, and then I was playing 1.75) to play offline.
I'm not a support guru, so my guesses may be totally off the wall, but the first thing I'd look at would be my Java version. Make sure that's up to date. I've had Java go very strangely wrong in the past. It's also possible that Minecraft itself is borked in some way; you might want to do a reinstall. Or, y'know, ask someone who knows what they're talking about, program-wise; that person is not me.
It should be working for you -- as I said, I was playing all afternoon (when I should have been doing other stuff!) with launcher 1.4.2, MC 1.75, and my network cable lying on the floor. The fact it's working just fine for me, but not for you, indicates that the problem is somewhere other than in the launcher or MC itself.
Baseball, then Minecraft.
