Re-installed Windows & Java: JVM Launcher fails

On an existing PC where I've run MC for months, Windows 8.1 crapped out and I had to re-install Windows, Java, and MC. Now MC won't run. The MC Launcher loads successfully; I pick a profile specifying my username and "latest version", and click the Play button. Receive an error dialog stating:

Java Virtual Machine Launcher
_________________________
Error: Could not create the Java Virtual Machine.
Error: A fatal exception has occurred. Program will exit.

Any thoughts on how to fix this?

Did you install normal Java, or the JRE? Do you have anything from the Development Console tab in the launcher or anything?

Eeek. I have the same problem, removed all of my java installations and reinstalled. Halp
