Hello fellow Minecrafters.
After getting huge lag spikes with my modified Forge client (installed as a "version"), I have decided to get more RAM. I upgraded from a pathetic 2GB to 4GB, giving plenty of room for Minecraft and everything else. However, when I try to change the JVM argument from -Xmx1024M to -Xmx2048M, Minecraft can not start, and tells that the java virtual machine could not be created. Exact text of the error is as follows:
Quote from Really Annoying Error-Dialog-Box »
Error: Could not create the Java Virtual Machine.
Error: A fatal exception has occurred. Program will exit.
This is really bad, guys. I got the new RAM chips specifically for Minecraft, but if I can't allocate more RAM, it would be a waste of money.
First off wrong forum as this is the "UNMODDED" forum.
Well, the reason for this is because you have 32-bit java which only supports 2GB ram. Download java 64-bit from Oracles websites.

First off it's a launcher issue, not a version issue - which defaults to "unmodified", as the launcher is vanilla as released by Mojang.
Thank you for the advice about 64-bit Java, I'll see if it works.
It turns out that it's impossible to install 64-bit anything on a 32-bit system. And I'm not buying 64-bit Windows any time soon (Minecraft doesn't even work on Ubuntu).
Thus, my problem persists. I need to know exactly how to allocate more RAM to Minecraft, without causing a crash/error. 2GB orso will be fine.
You cannot. Not with a 32bit OS. because the entire process is limited to 2G total in such an environment. The heap is merely one part of the total process size. You can bump it a tiny bit, up to 1400m or 1500m before you'll get the can't create virtual machine error.

Then how do I get it to run on 64-bit Ubuntu (Linux)? The .JAR supplied by Mojang does not work.
