I am running Minecraft client v1.7.9, server v1.7.9, and Java x64 v1.7.0_55 on Windows 8.1. My wife and I were playing in our own locally-hosted world for about an hour. Then we could no longer access our crafting tables, furnaces, or chests. Right-clicking on them had no effect.
My wife also said that when she tried to break a block, it would come right back.
If anyone knows how to fix this, we would really appreciate some assistance.

I ran into exactly the same problem while harvesting the goods in a mineshaft, the second one I have found in my relatively new world. It got bad enough that the game finally quit drawing the world so I could not leave the area. Quitting the game and restarting did not help and after several tries, I was no longer able to even open the world. Had to restore an old save to continue. I returned to the area and experienced the same problem. I was able to exit the area this time and the game started working right again so I think the issue may be with the mineshaft.
There is a known problem with mineshaft.dat (https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MC-33134 )--"Mineshaft.dat uses too much cpu". Mojang is aware per Mog's post on January 23, 2014. The discussion was way too technical for me but as near as I can tell there is no simple workaround. My plan is to stay away from mineshafts and hope for the best. Don't know if this is your problem, or if your problem is somehow related. Best of luck.

Maybe u have to look if u are in an Jungle Biom. The ead up many CPU Power at first joining. (Dame new Leave Despawn routine)
Ritter, you are amazing! I don't know what you did, but thank you for fixing our world. It is working perfectly again. And there was no need to apologize for the additions you made to our world. We appreciate you leaving the book for us to find with the explanation.
There are some very kind people in the Minecraft community and you are at the top of our list.
