I downloaded the minecraft launcher for mac osx and after opening it in applications this shows up:

Please fix the error and restart.

I have tried to delete the file and re-download it, each time this shows up, how do I fix it? I have lost the installation disk which has prevented me to 'factory reset' or restore... ?? What is the problem? thanks

I have had exactly the same issue on my daughter's computer. We recently updated Minecraft and upon starting the game again we were asked to login and the above error occurred. I have updated the OS, installed, uninstalled re-installed Java and Minecraft a number of times. My daughter is distraught as she can no longer access the worlds that she has spent many, many hours creating. I have seen a number of reports of this issue on quite a few forums and no-one including the developers have offered a solution. I hope that they can find a solution soon.

This is a problem with making an SSL connection.
As far as I can tell there are a couple of possible causes.
A damaged Java installation OR
a network proxy problem.

If you have a web filter, ad blocked, web washer, parental controls, similar web page security software, this could be the source of a proxy problem.
You could try whitelisting s3.amazonaws.com, or disabling filtering on HTTPS connections.
Note that 'disabling' such software doesn't always truly take the software out of the connection, so it can still be the cause of the problem even when disabled.
