I'm running a paid copy of minecraft and updated to 1.7.2 shortly after it came out. After updating, the game ran fine for quite some time, then about two weeks ago started to crash at launch with the message "This version of the file is not compatible with the verison of Windows you are running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 or x64 version of the program."
I haven't changed my computer's configuration at all (I'm running Windows 7, 64 bit), so I don't understand the issue, and I was not running any mods at all since updating to 1.7.2.
I tried unistalling and reinstalling, but the game continued crashing. On a whim I decided to try launching with Magic Launcher 1.2.5...and the game runs perfectly fine with it. I was content to call the problem solved.
However, now that mods are coming out for 1.7.2, I decided to install Forge and Twilight Forest. Forge will not install with the Forge installer and gives the message "There is no minecraft launcher profile at this location, you need to run the launcher first" I assume this is because I haven't been able to launch with the standard minecraft launcher since I reinstalled.
This question is not about Forge or other mods, but rather how to correct the error that is preventing me from launching via the standard launcher. If I can correct that problem, I believe it will correct the Forge issue as well. I just don't understand why my computer can no longer run a game that successfully worked for years....so what gives? To be clear, this problem started BEFORE I tried installing Forge, and is an issue with the unmodded, vanilla game. ANY help would be vastly appreciated
