I have had this computer that I play Minecraft on for about five years, and we (my dad and I) recently reset it back to factory specs. I then turned it to Windows 7 from Windows Vista. I've been using it to play Minecraft for about 1 month now. Today, around 2:15, I get on to play Minecraft and test this apparently really cool setting for Superflat worlds. However, here's what happens. I get on and my minecraft is lagging REALLY bad, it's as if someone else has control over my account because it never lags like this! It's normally really good! Sure, it's never the best but it's as good as it's gonna get for a computer that's five. And, surprisingly enough, it ran better on the five year old computer than on the three year old computer! However, it was SO laggy today that I turned my fps and my render distance down to the minimum. It was still slow and laggy. I turned off particle effects, made the graphics fast (they were on fancy because they were normally pretty good), and I turned clouds off. Still no difference. My single player worlds never are modded unless I use forge, which I rarely do since all my mods are on the other computer. My other computer took a dump and minecraft never worked on it. It was slow, laggy, and I hated it. On this computer I play on F11 mode because I'm used to how minecraft look son a full-sized computer, and the little things just make my eyes hurt. I turned off F11 mode, and it still didn't seem to make a difference. I pressed "W" to walk forward, and even just hitting it there was a delay, then my character walked forward for about five seconds without any warning. Just a few hours ago Minecraft looked as good as it ever did, I was playing in Beta 1.8 though. Then I broke a crafting table, and I lagged out BAD. The game froze up and I had to use my task manager to close it. My dad has minecraft on his computer, and the graphics look phenomenal, because his computer is only about 1 year old, he bought it new last year. Well, it was December 2012-January 2013. So it's pretty new. I believe Lenovo computers are meant for gaming, correct me if I'm wrong. What could be wrong that it was working almost as good as my dad's computer at first and now it's working like crap?

Well since you reset your computer to specs, then updated it to Windows 7, you should see if you got every driver up to date.
I'm not a computer genius, but either updating Java, OpenGL or LWJGL, should fix the problem. Also, as said above Optifine is a great idea. Also try FPSplus (a Minecraft MOD), it also helps getting rid of lag. And one more thing, with Beta 1.8. do you mean the snapshot (14w I think) or the actual Beta? They are both experimental versions so I recommend not to play them, since they are very likely to be buggy. If none of these work try getting a new computer, or downgrading again to Vista.
Java is updated all the way, and I really should get Optifine and working on my computer a bit. My computer lags all the time now without warning
