Several months ago I installed Minecraft on my Mac for my son to play... Problem is, I never get to use my Mac for anything else now because he always wants to play, and I won't even get into trying to figure out how to do mods on the Mac install.
So, I'm installing it on an older WindowsXP machine - it will be purely for minecraft.
It starts differently on the PC than it does on the Mac, so I'm trying to determine if I installed it correctly, etc.
On the PC, I was going to put a shortcut on the desktop for him to start the game, but I can't find where it hid the launchable .exe - the only one I can find is for the installer - is that normal? Does that mean the computer has to have an internet connection to play every time?
The first thing that comes up after double clicking the installer is "Minecraft Launcher 1.3.11" with a couple of tabs across the top and a "Play" button at the bottom. Clicking play opens the window for "minecraft 1.7.5" - which looks like the first window that comes up on the Mac (not sure of version number on Mac, but the window looks the same).
Does this sound normal? Maybe my Mac install is wrong? Maybe it's just the difference in the way it works on Mac and PC?

It is supposed to look like that, when that windows that comes up when you press the play button, you probably have two input boxes to add your login info... Right? Just fill them and start the game! It should work fine...
Correction---- on the Mac, it does begin with a launcher, where you then have to click again to start the game... I didn't remember it working that way.. So I guess the biggest differences I'm seeing is just the different look of the launchers between Mac and Windows.
It does appear that the Mac launcher is not updating the game - it's still running 1.5.x instead of updating to 1.7 - I'm not too worried about that since the Mac install should be going away.
Does it look for an updated version of the game every time you play?
It can or not depending upon how you use the launcher.
It sounds like you have an old version of the launcher on your Mac. The older launcher would detect a new version being available and ask if you want to update or not. You only had a choice of the version you had downloaded, or the most recent version, and there was no going back from updating.
The new launcher was released some time ago and supports "Profiles". You can create multiple profiles and each one can be configured to behave differently. A profile can be set to use a specific version of minecraft or it can be set to update to the latest version. You can create a profile and set it to use a version of minecraft from two years ago and when you use that profile the launcher will download that old version of minecraft if hasn't already been downloaded into your 'version library'
You can also set each profile to use a different game directory (to store your saves), so that you don't accidentally open your favorite world with the wrong version of minecraft.
