Hello everyone, if this topic is in the wrong section just let me know!
I used to have this game installed about a year ago, but deleted it and the .minecraft folder. Now I would like to be able to play it again. But ever since the new launcher and 1.6 I havent been able to download or play the game.
Before everyone asks, I am running McAfee, and I am not going to switch (at least not for a while) or going to leave firewall disabled. If there is no helping then you dont have to read on. I have gotten the files for the game and ran it
I get this error:
Bootstrap (v5)
Current time is Mar 10, 2014 9:06:43 PM
System.getProperty('os.name') == 'Windows 7'
System.getProperty('os.version') == '6.1'
System.getProperty('os.arch') == 'amd64'
System.getProperty('java.version') == '1.7.0_51'
System.getProperty('java.vendor') == 'Oracle Corporation'
System.getProperty('sun.arch.data.model') == '64'
When I click the link it says that s3.amazonaws.com has timed out. when i disable my mcafee firewall i get the same errors. Minecraft.exe and s3.amazonaws are both on the trusted sites and programs.
can you open your hosts file and copy/paste its contents here
Press Win+R. In the window that appears, enter "%SystemRoot%\System32\drivers\etc", and press Enter. In the window that appears you will see a file, "hosts". Open that file in Notepad

Here is what i think your'e asking for:
# Copyright (c) 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
# 127.0.0.1 localhost
# ::1 localhost
It's a built-in safety feature. There is an easy workaround. ClickStart ->All Programs -> Accessories. Right-clickNotepad, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or clickAllow or Yes.
Open the Hosts file (from the notepad you just opened) , make your changes, and then click File ->Save.
If you don't have the administrators password, ask whoever has it to input it for you
every website/link etc has an ip, that line in your hosts file was forcing your computer to goto that ip (216.238.64.66)
for all s3.amazonaws.com links, instead of the correct ip, thus minecraft was trying to look in one place for the file, but was being told the wrong place and couldn't find the file.
