i am playing in complete vanilla minecraft with nothing else installed. every once in a while though, when i make a new world, right before it says 'Building Terrain' and will say- only for a second- 'Converting world'. Why does it do this? does it effect the world at all? please help. If it matters i am currently in 1.7.5.
For a new world, that is meaningless; "converting world" means it is converting from the pre-Anvil chunk format (pre-1.2 worlds) to Anvil, but of course for a newly created world there are no files to convert over.
Also, I've noticed that on Superflat worlds (in particular) it stays up for longer, and it appears that during this time the game is searching for a spawn point; if you have ever used a mapping utility on a newly generated world you may see a whole mess of scattered chunks leading from the origin (0, 0) to your spawn point, as the game has to create a chunk before it can see if it is suitable; up to 1,000 checks at randomly selected locations will occur until it gives up and uses whatever the last point was, and generating up to 1,000 chunks can take longer than the default 25x25 (625) chunk spawn area, not sure why it often has problems finding a spawn point on Superflat maps. The game probably just doesn't properly update the screen during this period, which is usually very short for non-Superflat worlds.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
