Ever since night vision came out, when I give myself both night vision and blindness, the screen goes pitch black except for the GUI and sun. It's been reported multiple times on the bug tracker, but closed as "works as intended" without any info on how to fix it. I have heard that it has something to do with the graphics card, but any more than that I can't find.

...it works as intended, as in there is nothing to fix. It is supposed to be that way when you give yourself night vision and blindness at the same time.
But for some people, they just have the effects of both effects, such as in the "handheld torch" video...and Dinnerbone implied that you should still be able to see the blocks in front of you.

That second image is just Blindness and no Night vision.
Those two are like antigens to one another.
They are NOT meant to be together, for this is what you get in first image.
Edit: Just tested in 1.7.4, by giving myself infinite blindness and night vision. All I have is a sun moving and absolute solid black everywhere else while trying to run around on the ground, but could not see nothing at all. This is working as it should be.
