The minecraft pings are not the same thing. They are proprietary 'minecraft protocol' packets that return you stuff like the server icon, server software version number and number of players. So just because ICMP ECHOs work (command line pings) doesn't mean much other than 1) the hostname is resolvable, and 2) the machine is at least partially reachable.

In your case, I find that mc.ecocitycraft.com isn't answering ICMP pings (many systems don't support pinging across the internet for security reasons), but it works fine in my minecraft. It shows up active in my server screen and I can connect.

ya I just chose a random 1.7.9 server to try to connect to and ya as you can see, nothing. my buddy is gonna give our ISP a call and ask em wtf is goin on with all of this, see if that has anything to do with it

Virgin Media customer's have had trouble in the UK and for at least some of them, using a VPN let's MC work. It's something you could try.

alrighty, with some luck, my buddy called our ISP and they suggested a couple things, and ended up trying the 2 outbound rules for 25565 with TCP and UDP.....and I can connect to servers that have straight IPs for the server, none of the website with .com/.net work. at least its a semi fix and Im able to play online again

I've been having this problem for months and it's made be pretty much give up playing. I've spent at least 10 or 11 hours looking for a fix.

hey my apologies for not coming back with a fix, what my problem ended up being was that my roommate had a server of his port forwarded on 25565 which in turn prevented other servers on that port coming in so we could connect. So he changed his port on his server to 25566 and all the problems got fixed. so I can now join any server once again

ps: that 3rd server is another friends that's not online

I'm having this problem too, I can use 1.8 but any versions before it wont let me connect and crashes the game.
