Playing totally vanilla, PC, single player survivor, 1.7.5
I've played this seed on and off for months with no problems and the last few days all of a sudden I'm hitting totally dead chunks.
While branch mining I'd hit X=288 and the game just stops. It takes a minute to get turned around to head back and while holding the W key down you move about 0.2 blocks every 5 to 8 seconds. After several minutes you get about 10-15 blocks away and it speeds up again. Sometimes windows actually showed the little rotating circle in the middle of the screen with the "not responding" message.
Moving over 3 blocks to mine another branch goes fine until I hit the 288 spot then it dies again and I have to repeat the exit process.
Mining in the other direction I have the same problem a few hundred blocks away.
I then moved to an old section to continue branches along the Z axis and hit dead chunks a few hundred blocks away that weren't dead before.
Traveling on the surface I see the same dead areas in the same spots that will stop me dead.
It's been terrible since the 1.7.5 download but I can't swear it didn't start a day or two before that. I've been playing the seed steady for a couple weeks and this just started.
Sounds like an defect chunk or an massive entities spawn.
U can check it with MC-Edit for u self or upload u filehoster and i fix it for u.
How do you check it with MC-Edit? Is that a downloadable program or is that already part of the MC program?
Edit: Did some checking, found the program and I'll give it a shot tonight but I don't think it's an entities spawn problem. I've created these on my own before with a runaway chicken farm and this seems to be widespread over several areas.

Downloaded & ran MCedit last night and it definitely is not an entity problem. I could clearly see all the entity boxes of my cow farm and chicken farm and there was virtually no red boxes around the problem area which is a couple hundred blocks away.
I couldn't find coordinates in MCE but I could find the problem section because thats where all my mining tunnels end. It' more than 1 or 2 chunks and more like a line 100 or more blocks long (I haven't tested the edges yet). Whenever you cross roughly around X=290 or X=310 you hit the lag either mining or on the surface. Frame rate drops to 0. Last night I was able to run through it in a tunnel I dug earlier but it took me 20 or more minutes to dig that 20 or so blocks and even with a sprinting run it almost totally stopped me a couple times going through that section.
I couldn't find an "analyse" option in MCE or a place to check the coordinates of an area to see where I was at.

What can I check?
Thanks, JJ

Hard to say without seen the map.

For more checking and repairing are tools like "Minecraft Regions Fixer" (An command line tool).
As I say: "Hard to say without seen the map."
(PS: i have 2 maps the last day on them they Animal grinder was the problem. But i think on u map its more an wrong located chunk.)
