Ok, so here's my story. It involves a modded copy of minecraft but I wasn't sure if it should go in there since this problem doesn't seem to be directly related to the mod itself.
I'm playing an open to LAN pixelmon world with my 3 roommates. Ordinarily, we would have simply used a server or even a wireless LAN network to do this on, but our college prohibits both for bandwidth and anti-anonymity reasons. So our only recourse is to set up a wired ethernet network. We got 4 ethernet cables and a cheap router and set up the LAN.
The problem we're having is this: certain computers consistently fail to connect. One of these computers (an older Inspiron running windows 7) has never been able to connect, and the second one which is a relatively new Macbook connected the night prior to the issue and then consistently fails to connect after that. We've checked my host computer's IPv4 and open to LAN port for errors, we've swapped cables to see if that could be a malfunction, and we tried each slot on the router to see if they were acting up. We disabled and re-enabled firewalls. None of these things solved the problem. We also were able to connect to the network with both accounts associated with the non-connecting computers using a spare PC running Vista that one of my roommates has, so we know it isn't an account issue of any kind. Another strange curiosity is that my computer's IPv4 changed by one digit between these two sessions (from 192.168.2.2 to 192.168.1.2), although I believe it's inconsequential because, again, my roommate's Vista laptop connects.
The only anomalies I can think of are the following:
1. The router only works sporadically. I don't believe this is the case since my roommate's Vista laptop has consistently been able to connect despite these problems.
2. The port on my roommate's windows 7 laptop doesn't have a strong enough data transfer speed to handle connecting to the Minecraft LAN world. Again, this is pure speculation and I have no idea if this could even be an issue assuming all ethernet ports are created equal. This doesn't explain why the Mac fails to connect, since it had been working the night before. I don't believe there is anything mechanically wrong with the ports because the network itself shows up on their connections menu.
I don't think that the problem for your roommate's windows 7 computer is the speed of the network interface ethernet port. It is not much data that transfers between a client and a server.
When you connect to the server host, do you just click on the server in the multiplayer list or do you use direct connect with host ip and port number?
Try with reseting the router to fabric settings. Maybe it will fixit but sometimes some config is needed.
Just a question did you try to restart the router by just plugging it out and in? (In the last post I did assume that you had tried that.)
Yes, we tried resetting the router by unplugging it. How does one go about resetting a router to fabric settings?
Edit: Nevermind, I found a reset button. I can't test this until later when my roommates are home, so if you could give me some info on what configurations I would need to change to make this work if the reset fails that would be great.
